It's horses for courses though. The Canon has 1080p video and deals with video better in general whereas the Nikon has a higher flash sync speed so is better for use with strobes in action shots. I think the Nikon has a better high ISO performance too, though don't quote me on that.
Personally I prefer Canon's ergonomics and the way they function (plus I have a load of Canon fit lenses). If you're starting from scratch that isn't a consideration obviously.
I've had enough of cropped sensors so I'd be getting a 5D Mk II if I had the cash |

Gonna go for the 7D as it does feel better in the hand and with an ISO upto 12800 it suits my needs for early morning and late evening wildlife stuff aswell as sports.
The full HD video mode on the 7D does outclass the D300s in my opinion.
Also I believe it has a more rapid processor . So its of to the camera shop for me to make myself skint for the next few months
Cheers for your input dudes. |

Good choice.
If you're looking to do a fair bit of video then the kit lenses are an ok choice. If it's stills you're going to major in then invest in some good L glass. |

Wish I was making that choice! - I've had a canon 350D for 5 years and love it - never had a Nikon but know a few people that have and I think as a previous post said its probably just down to personal pref. on fell etc - I suspect there is nothing betweenthem -
As with cars you will always find people that prefer Ford to Vauxhall, Merc to BM or Audi and vice versa
either way I'm jealous! |

Hi Guys, I did buy the 7D and really pleased with it, it shoots ace at low light and the WB is so easy to custom to certain conditions ie. Indoor fridges, outside sunny days, cloudy days etc all on the top dial, as for the shutter speed and 8 frames per second it is outstanding.
I have used my mates d300s and have to say that this is equally a stunning camera for the price(both expensive) so the only reason I bought the 7D is the way it felt in my hand and the access to the functions are good for my fat fingers.both produce amazing images so whatever one of these you opt for will be a good choice.
Does anyone know of a photography course that specializes in snow sports or do any of you guys teach as I am always learning the continuem of knowledge that is photography.

QUOTE (ridgers - 07/10/2010 @ 10:02) Does anyone know of a photography course that specializes in snow sports or do any of you guys teach as I am always learning the continuem of knowledge that is photography. No, although there are some websites you can google up where people talk about that sort of stuff.
I think most formal training people won't have any clue about board sports generally - unless they're specifically riders then they don't know the rules. Your best bet is to look at a lot of stuff in the magazines and elsewhere and try to emulate what you like.
The key, not that I'm claiming to have it dialled, is to ride with good people - they know what works, know how to ride for the camera, all that stuff.
Oh, and shoot raw, then you don't have to worry about white balance and you don't get the artefacts jpeg sometimes sticks in there. |

Thanks for the replies guys,
I have learned a lot through this forum and have spent even more money to boot but I guess it will be worth it in the long run.......Won't it??
With regards to shooting RAW this is a new thing to me but I can say without a doubt it is the way to go regarding photoshop alterations(corrections)
Been told I need to invest in a 70-200mm L lens at a price of £1700 for my 7D to get the most out of snowsport photography which is fine but the price of getting set up as a snow photog is mega and never ending....GRRRRR!!
Filters what do you guys use...? I was thinking a polariser would probably be a standard filter for the bright conditions but am willing to take some more of your well appreciated advice.
Cheers again... |
