lost quite a lot of real estate to adverts s'ppose can't be helped when the sites goes commerical.

Like the front page - but forums look a little cluttered. Still no easy way to find items in the review section other than page 1 of x.

still - I'm old and scared of change

QUOTE (Starnzy - 11/06/2009 @ 16:19)

Unfortunately, due to the implementation of the new leaderboard style banner (top right) which is significantly wider than the older 468 width banner, it doesn't lend itself so well to 1024px width resolution displays. It's best viewed on screens of 1280 upwards, otherwise you will get the very right hand side of the screen (the ads?!) just off the edge...

Looks good, good job!.... (i'm on a 1280px setup)

Seem's a shame that the site wont look so good on 1024px set-ups though seeing as only 50% of web users are on 1280 and above.... seems a big chunk of the market not seeing the site at it's best??

I agree especially with the rise to fame of netbooks with 8.9inch and 10inch screens which at best display 1024px. Most users will happily scroll vertical but horizontal is a pain.

Besides that excellent job guys!!

does anyone else find the light blue text on grey background a bit hard to read? like the list of unread forum posts on the left hand side?? might just be my dodgy eyesight

This was the first thing I thought - overall nice job though

Starnzy,

Site looks great, but I agree with the horizontal scrolling. Happens on my laptop as well.

You should be able to resolve though with a little extra code.

Have a look at cascading your stylesheets based on the screen resolution on the client machine
(similar to the way you'd have 1 or more sheets for different browsers) but only have the width of content container set in the second stylesheet.

Logic would be:

link rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet.css" type="text/css"

// containing all your styles and how you want the site to look in your choice of resolution

If screen res != 1280

link rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheetSmallScreen.css" type="text/css"

// containing ONLY the css code to make the wrapper smaller, based on the screen res of the client

Do a google search and you'll find loads of javascript includes for teh head of teh page that will detect the users screen resolution. I see the sites done in asp, which aint my forte, but I'd imagine you'd be able to pipe out javascript no problem. There might even be an asp way of doing teh detection.

Once you have that working, if it floats your boat, you can start playing with font size and other div sizes etc to make smaller resolutions look the way you want. But that means more stylesheet management in the long run.

As long as all your main styles are in the first stylesheet called and only the ones you want to override for smaller screens are in the second your main styles will be applied first and the extra ones only applied to users where their setup meets your conditionals.

Hope that helps.

Don't worry about it, I'm already looking at improving it for 1024 res, at least so as everything up to the RHS ads is shown (meaning no need to scroll to see main content/click on 'new' against forum post etc. etc).

I've not finished it yet mate
Deploying the rest of it in 10 mins.......

* Edit: By the way, it wont fit 100% width on 1024x768, but it'll get about 99% on screen, which includes the main content - it'll just be a fraction cut off the RHS of the side banner strip. Should address the main concern that has been raised here though
