  #1  Newbie with a boot question!  Posted 29/07/2010 @ 11:48
Hi Guys

Very much a newcomer to the snow, but have fell in love with it and decided its the hobby for me!

I am looking to buy my own boots, hiring i'm afraid just doesn't appeal to me! and would like a little advice please

I'm a size 5.5/6 in normal shoes, when we went to Morzine in Feb this year, we hired boots and i had a pair of Burton (sorry dont know what model) in size 6. They were very uncomfortable as one: i have very flat feet, which i didn't work out to be the cause of the pain in my leg until the 2nd to last day! Two: i have very chubby little legs I'm not a big girl, 5ft 2 size 10, but like i say wide calves, which is an issue in buying boots for everyday wear. I'm just a bit over whelmed by the whole which make, which size boot senario and would really appreicate any advice or if anyone is in the same situation as me?!!

Many thanks

Hannabelle

Yo, welcome to GB and the wonderful world of snowboarding

Boots are amazingly personal, what is right for one is likely to be horrendous for somebody else, so the best thing to do would be to go to your local store and speak to the staff, see what they have and then try on as many pairs as you possibly can, even if you have to go to different stores. it can take ages, but it will be more than worth it!

try not to be swayed by colour, pattern or brand (your boots will be covered up 90% of the time so it really doesnt matter!) - buy the boots that fit the best, even if they cost a little more.

I'm sure someone will come along soon saying 'I ride these and they're the best', but really the only option is to try them on!
If possible, you could try going to the Metro show in London in October - there will be just about every boot on the market available there!

Hi Hannabelle & welcome to GB

Boots wise I'm afraid that I'm going to say what loads of other peeps will probalby repeat ... get to a shop or one of the snowboard shows (Olympia, NEC, etc) and try on all the boots that you can find ... really, do it! It might take ages but you'll find a boot that fits properly.

A stated size really isn't important (when it comes to boots anyway) and the most important factor is whether the boot fits your foot. Your shoe size gives you an indication of where to start with seeing which boots fit - ask for a 5 or a 6 to start with. If you have flat feet you may need custom footbeds or you may not, depends on the boot.

Grill is pretty good at handing out boot advice and may be able to recommend a great boot fitter (other than himself) to go see as I don't think you're anywhere close to him. Grill ... over to you

as they said....snowboard golden rule number 1 = never EVER buy boots without tryng them on first. Everyones feet ared differet you need to find the pair that fit you best irespective of make or colour.

Thanks for the replies

i thought it prob would be a case of trying on lots of boots!

Could anyone suggest/recommend a decent outlet/shop in the East Anglia region? I realise a bit of travelling may be in order as i pretty much live in the sticks!

Thanks!

Not sure about shops out your way as I'm pretty much on the opp side of the country... although I do have a friend that lives in Norfolk and snowboards so I'll ping her & see what she says. If there's no decent local shops then you could always do a trip to one of the big shows that come around in Sept/Oct they always have loads of gear to try & if you're lucky you'll bag a "last seasons stuff but fits me perfectly" bargain as the shops try to offload older gear on the cheap

Firstly, welcome to the sport!
Secondly, welcome to the forum!

My advice would be to go to a store and test them out, try different sizes and different boots. Flat feet are usually helped in normal shoes by having special insouls to create more of an arch aren't they? you could probably use them with a snowboard boot too, but also worth checking out before you splash cash.

I'd have a look in any stores in your area, and if you find the chosen boot that fits comfortably and suits your size - have a search online, i've noticed that gear in high street stores tends to be a lot more, and you can get some real bargains online especially if you find what your looking for in the sales.

Hope this at least helps a bit

I'm glad you said you were a female too, as I'd feel bad for a guy with size 5 feet

each to their own, but I know most people on here don't like this attitude.
If you get good service from a store and their staff, the least you can do is give them your trade, especially with a niche store like an independent snowboard shop.

most stores will be happy to sell you last years kit cheap if they have it in your size, if not ask and you may get a deal.

That's very true, and I totally agree with you. But from experience I have found some stores can charge a fair bit more than other stores online. It obviously won't apply everywhere and to every shop, but just from my own personal experience, especially whilst I lived in America with the franchise stores.

no not this one again! The reason things often cost more on stores is because in store you dont just pay for the boots you pay for the ability to try them and the shops help in choosing the right ones, online stores dont have to pay for a showroom or the staff to help fit your boots. Its completely wrong to go to a store, use their boot fitting service for free when you dont intend to buy from them. Thats theft, if you want to buy cheap on the internet then go for it but you then take your risk that they dont fit. You cant have it both ways, high street specialist store service and online prices together.

yeah i totally agree with this and to be fair if your spending alot of money on gear in a shop you can always ask for a discount or a deal sweetner, you cant really do that when you buy online

I work in a shop and there is NOTHING more annoying than someone coming in, trying on boots for a half hour to an hour, finding a boot that fits them perfectly but asking for the name and size on a card so they can look around. Don't waste my time if you have no intention of buying it from our shop.

Of course its cheaper online, no returns, no waranty (usually) and no boot fitting expertise.

Of course you're american too as you think this is ok to do. There is a reason most of the smaller shops are going out of business to the big box stores...we can't compete with the amount of product they buy compare to what we do.

All we have left to offer is the service we give, but by having that 'use their service buy buy online' attitude you are putting us out of business. We don't mark up prices to make shitloads of money, we do it to survive.

Sorry, rant over...lesson being that you need to try on boots before you buy!
