QUOTE (Bods - 31/08/2010 @ 13:34) INFORMATION FOR BUDDING BIKERS _ Especialliy Tom Allan.... SL (basic Coil Sprung Dart fork) SL Comp (Tora Coil Sprung Fork - externally adjustable - quite good!!) SL Expert (Recon Coil Sprung fork - bit lighter than Tora's) SL Pro (Reba Dual Air - the dogs Danglies XC racer spec.) IMO the biggest thing between the RH SL & SL Comp is the brakes. Fire and forget Juicy 3s on the Comp compared to that Tektro rubbish on the basic model. No contest. |

Back from Cannock, loved it....faster flowing and well designed - little bit too armoured in places and probably not as technically difficult as say Dalby or Whinlatter, but on the whole, certainly enjoyed the blast around the Dog and a shortened version of the Monkey - how on earth do they have rounded stones everywhere? I saw no rivers, no beaches, no......and yet is was like they had armoured the trails with washed river gravel?
Top weekend away with the wife. |

Biked the Ridgeway yesterday, 40 miles from Avebury to Compton. Awesome ride in beautiful English weather (rain, wind, fog). Took me 8hrs including stops on an Enduro FSR, which I didn't really need at all. For anyone trying the same I recommend a gel seat cover . |

ok, advices/recommendations please...
the masochist in me is looking to get a hardtail for riding out in Morzine after the lifts have closed - figure I'll go for a hard-tail as I have a nice bouncy Ellsworth for when the lifts are open but it's no good for climbing.
So what to get?
I'm debating between a superlight Carbon frame x/c ripper (something like a high end scott), will fly up the hills but might be a bit harsh on the long descents. Or, something more trad like an Orange P7 so a bit of give in a good old fashioned steel frame?... or something more beefy like an Orange Crush? heavier going up but more fun coming down..
Seen some good reviews of a carbon commencal which is supposed to descend really well....
Any ideas???

I spent my first summer in cham riding lift assisted on a Specialized P2 frame with an 8cm marzo DJ fork. Taught me tons and kind of wish I still had it. With a second chainring on the front that would be killer for what you're looking for...although too heavy for serious xc I guess. |

Perhaps consider the ON-ONE Carbon 456. Lightweight and well designed to take a long travel fork - they rrp at £499 for frame + headset/seatpost. Or if you were looking at a shorter travel fork then maybe consider the ON-ONE carbon XC Whippet currently on offer at £399 for frame.

or the steel equivalent 456 frame? they get great reviews, I've ridden one and it flies up hill, yet you have a reassuring spring that the steel frame provides... put some biggish tyres on her, slap some 120mm forks with lockout on the front and go ride.
If all else fails, a nice lightweight alloy frame - perhaps an M4 Alloy Specialized Rockhopper? then you haven't got to worry about knicks/chips in the frame like you would with the steel. |

Rode the Sherwood Pines trails last weekend Another trail centre ticked off. Quite enjoyed the route, not technically challenging, but some good fast stretchs of singletrack that you could really blast it on and probably a good allrounder to take a mixed ability group for their first forrays off road. i.e. relatively tame.
Would probably not recommend the route in the wet, as unlike other trail centres, they haven't got round to reinforcing the trails with stone yet, hence it could get quite muddy!! Certainly no where near as good as Cannock, but not bad for saying its only an hour down the road. |

Bods you're not wrong there on the muddy-ness. We went for my birthday this year (February) and some sections get seriously muddy (so deep that your pedals skim the mud as you're trying to get through it)
I do wish Cannock was just a bit closer - Pines is alright, but like you said, it's not really all that challenging. Did you do the pier and "downhill" bit? |

haha, so true! It was a great place for me to start out at, but I've definitely outgrown it now...
I've been wanting to get back on my bike since my big 'off' in Wales, but weather and time commitments have been conspiring against me - Pines is nice and close but it's rained a lot recently and I just can't be bothered with the mammoth clean up job that's needed once it gets muddy down there! |

Quite like the look of those On-Ones and they appear to be a bit better value than a few others I've looked at. Particularly like the look of the Ti one but might be stretching my budget a bit... decisions decisions... |

Just to upset the applecart, have you considered joining the 29er fraternity? Mate of mine just built himself a niner up and it's a beautiful ride. Will complement the full bouncer nicely. |
