#1 Morzine/Avoriaz must see's? Posted 24/01/2012 @ 21:04 |

Off on Feb 4th for a week... intermediate level (whatever that means!) so sticking to blues and reds plus a fair share of park action. Any favourite spots / runs out there? Must see's and do's? Would hate to get back hearing i missed out on any hidden gems
Likewise for any mid mountain bars / stop off's for a cheeky beer on the slopes too
And i'm dragging the mrs. to bar robbos for a Mutzig on high recommendation but i'm sure she'd appreciate a few nice restaurant suggestions too!
Thanks all, YDR |

If you're staying in Morzine then La Chaudanne was a very nice restaurant to eat in with a nice wine bar downstairs. Robbos is great too, love that Mutzig!
The runs down from La Rosta were good, and Mont Chery was excellent with all the snow as its quiet so gets less chopped up. |

The Stash is good, but gets very busy and quickly tracked out. If you have a powder day make sure you are up first and out there first. It's the ideal place in bad weather as the trees help with the fog/visibility.
Also, there is a blue down from the Prolays chair, jump off the side of this to the right, doesn't seem to get that heavily tracked if the weather is bad, there are other patches of trees and stuff below this which can be quite interesting.
The other chair (Linderets) that goes back towards avoriaz from the bottom of the Stash has a nice off piste section underneath it.
There is a massive wide open area around the route from the Le Fornet chair. Wasn't working when I was there, tracked out and icy for the first half of the week, shrouded in mist and closed at the end of the week.
Also there is a cool area called Paine Dranse which is a lot quieter, some lazy people must find it a pain in the arse to get to (it's two valleys from Avoriaz not just one ) A lot of good piste here (no walkie bits) and huge off piste areas similar to Le Fornet but with some tree cover.
Have fun mate, give us some pics. |

Just got back yesterday. The bowl area above les gets (top right of piste map) is useful for several runs to try that end up in one place at the bottom. Couple of great reds there. Also for later in the once the steeper stuff gets ruined, try a long, mostly fast blue that takes you back to the main Plenney bubble lift. Something like "route b"? Great confidence run to end the day on through trees, round bends etc..
Also the comment about getting up early for the powder is very true. Saturday morning was awesome. Was there for just 3 days so didn't bother with avoriaz and went with cheaper morzine/les gets only pass, approx 30E/day. |

Piste B!! That's a great run, a great confidence builder that my GF used a lot on holiday to warm up each morning. |

For restaurants in morzine...
If you like beef get a potonce from Etale (down from Pleney near cinama) As mentioned Chaudanne is v nice (on road out of town near Sherpa and Ed) La Flamme is v good but quite small so be sure to book in advance. (outside super m gondola) Clin d'oeil is supposed to be nice, not been there personally (down by champion supermarket) Augerge de la combe a zorre is a bit cheaper but still decent, nice pizzas and good set menus (right in the town centre near tourist office).
Riding wide, don't overlook Les Gets. I found people tended to head straight over to Avoriaz and Lindarets, which for the most part is average. Good variety in Les G, easy off piste, trees, decent length runs. Chamossiere has steep bowls and is brilliant if you get some fresh. Mont Chery is a great hill and v quiet.
Couple of decent routes on the Avoriaz side. Head up mosettes and take the long run down to Morgins, if there isn't much snow low down you may need to walk a bit at the bottom. Head up the chair at the bottom (nice pic of dents du midi from the top) and work your way back down the valley to Crosets where you can get back over to Avoriaz.
Alternatively, head over towards Linga via Lindarets, get the bus to Chatel (v frequent, 10 min ride). Head up and take the chairs/tbars over to Abondance. It's a bit of a trek but worth it imo, head back the same route or join it up with the other route and so instead of bussing back from chatel, head down to Morgins and back that way. Make sure you've got enough time for either of those because you'll end up a long way from home.
Slightly different variation would be to get to Morgins from Mosettes, walk across town the the chair and get to Chatel that way. Then over to Abondance, back to Chatel, bus to Linga and back via Lindarets. It's all coming back to me now |

Plus one for chatel some good runs there.. Also theres a nice open run which goes down to the super morzine bubble. Really wide but gets steeper and can get abit icy at the bottom. Had a great time doing laps of that the other week as there was hardly anyone on it and 20cm of fresh snow as well good times!! Also if your in Avoriaz if your up by the park if you take the far left run through the baby park hitting the small kickers you can then run through the tunnel at the bottom and straight down through to the baby stash. Loads of features to hit on the way until you get to the chair lift that takes you straight back to the park area so you can do it all over again. Sorry I cant remember the names of the lifts ill try and dig my piste map out and name them for ya. |

Was in Champery / Les Crosets last week.
Really quiet, much nicer than the Avoriaz side in terms of people. The slopes are great and there is lots of varied terrain, plus accessible off piste stuff. You have 3 options to get over .
If you want to grab a bite, then you can't do worse than Cafe Rey-Bellet in Les Crosets. Cracking hot dogs, pizza and suchlike for reasonable prices. |

I quite fancy popping over that side for lunch one day when I'm there next week Just got back (I go to Champery a couple of times a season). As Wildebeest said, great hotdogs and pizzas at Cafe Corrine et Alain Rey-Bellet. It's a little hut under the hotel just down from the new Grands Conches chair and opposite the Mossettes chair. Get down Mossettes early in the day as it can get mogulled at the top. Best run is off the Rippailles drag lift (fast blue for carving and quiet). |
