Revision #1 (Last edited: 08/08/2010 @ 12:31)
I'm about to buy a Skunk Ape BTX & wanted peoples thoughts, especially Grill's & TomW . It's the 09 wide 165. I really wasn't looking for a libtech. I really wanted a NS Legacy or Nidecker Megalight. However the price is what I can afford & it's the right size, wide & has the MT & Banana. All of which I'm really struggling to find elsewhere at the right price.

I'm 235lbs, 6 foot & like to go fast on piste & off piste when I can. Natural kickers & stuff all week, but only go to the park on the last day. I really wanted a do it all board that I could ride fast & get through ice. I get away 2-3 times a year.

I've got a Freedom 163 which I've had for 4 years.

What do you think, are people still having issues with Libtech quality?

Thanks

Yes people are still having issues, and no I wouldn't recommend it. I find the ride is just so "meh". Get the Legacy. Last years is available for 325 which is a steal when you include the warranty. Megalight isn't terribly beefy either.

Thanks Grill, I did look at the NS Legacy but I thought it was out of stock, but 163 is in.

So Megalight VS Lagacy the latter is beefier & for the money gets Vario & camber. I can't find a Mega with both for that price. I was impressed with the weight of the mega & ultra.

Thanks again

Personal reflections from a relative newbie (6ft2, 210 lbs).

I love my 161 Skunk Ape. Got it last Jan with C60 bindings and it immediately made me feel as if my riding improved dramatically vs the (somewhat crappy) Salomon Ace I had before. Rode it about 20 days last season, mainly off piste in Switzerland.
- Tons of fun charging through deep steep powder in Andermatt and Engelberg - even with this relatively short length for my ample weight
- I really like how the shape almost obliges you to carve cleanly on piste
- I got the impression the base is not as fast as my mate's Nitro Blacklight
- Going straight with a flat base (as well as on drag lifts) the shape absolutely makes the ride feel chattery, and you have to get used to that. Not a stable cruise missile feeling
- Oh and I believe the magnetraction really did save my butt (literally) on several occasions when I had to get down some super steep Icy bits!

The one thing I would have done differently is buy a size larger for a bit more float (I notice that I need to be going very fast to really get on top of the powder). If/when I find something similar with a directional (powder) shape I will seriously consider getting it.

Good luck with your reseach

AL

Thanks Uncle Al think I'm going to go for the NS. Just need to decide on the 163 or 166 now.
