Hi Guys,

I've just passed my BASI level 2 and am thinking about heading out to Japan next season.

Anyone here got any experience of working/teaching out there? Whats it like to get jobs, visas etc?

Cheers!

Mike Pow will likely be along soon who might have some info for you.

I would also recomend this book: Snow Search Japan Ski Guide - an excellent new guide book about skiiing/snowboarding in Japan which has sections of working there too.

If you can't speak Japanese you will be limited pretty much to the Niseko area dealing with Aussies.

In terms of visas you can get a WHV if under 30 years old. If you are over 30 you will need to be sponsored. There are visas available for instructors but you need to have 3 years experience. That means 36 months, not 6 seasons or 3 seasons. You have to be able to prove that you have that experience before someone will sponsor you. Because it is a bit of a mission to do so most places will only sponsor someone if there are no other options.

Club Med Japan will pay for flights, accommodation and food plus pay you a bit to instruct for them - I think it is on some sort of 'culture exchange' type visa. Only thing is that you have to hang out with the guests in the evening as well making it a very long day with not a huge amount of time to ride yourself.

Also if you want to instruct in Japan you will have a LOT more luck with jobs if you can teach skiing as well as snowboarding.

If I were under 30 I would go there on WHV, get a job cleaning or in a bar somewhere and ride all day. Don't really want to waste the Japanese powder on a level one lesson teaching people how to put their bindings on.

Good luck with it all!

Yeah I'm not hugely bothered about teaching in Japan, as I'm going mainly for the snow, so might look at some bar work so I can ride in the day, but we'll see what happens, and I'd be going on a Working Holiday Visa, looks like a mission to try and get sponsored!

Thanks for the info though, its a great help!

Are you allowed to do bar work on a WHV?
