Revision #1 (Last edited: 24/11/2003 @ 20:25)
Okay, just wondering if anyone out there has done / can recomend any decent instructor coarse & what level you really need to be at before you should start to even consider the training?
I've had a look at
pro - ride @ whistler - looks great but quite expensive for 12 weeks,

& found
non stop ski - i know, says ski but it's board orientated.

Has anyone come across these 2 or recomend something better? I'd say i'm a pretty competent boarder now (be even better after this season) - on the pro ride scale just upto instructor training level, but do you know of anywhere better??

Looking for at least 3 months away...

xbos ..... take a look at :

http://www.theinternationalacademy.com/

they were out in Banff this year and looked very good - everyone seemed to be having a quality time and progressing nicely.

here's a brief summary of what they offer :

"The International Academy is the UK's leading instructor training company, offering the widest choice of courses at some of the top resorts around the world, including:

CANADA -Whistler, Lake Louise, Mont Tremblant, Jasper
FRANCE - Val d'Isere
USA - Mammoth, Stowe
NEW ZEALAND - Cardrona
CHILE - Valle Nevado, La Parva, El Colorado

Whether you're a recreational skier or boarder or an expert, we have the course to suit. Training takes place over a 4-12 week period and is provided by the top qualified instructors in resort. All courses lead to professional, world wide recognised qualifications.

North American and European courses start in January and March, whilst NZ and Chilean course enable you to train in the summer months!
"

if non of those take your fancy - try some of these

xbos, have a look at In The Powder, the chap who runs it posts on here (Mike Pow). Their courses sound pretty good, get in touch with Mike as well, he gave me loads of info and help when I was looking a little while ago.

Hey coleymystr,
Starky sent me a load of info - lots of pdf's with comparrisons of all the coarses mentioned above - there were some cheaper ones on there, but it looks like i'll probably go with the inthepowder recomendation. Was thinking about the nonstopski one or the international academy one that bigfoot posted, but although they were cheaper they dodn't include all the qualifications that the inthepowder one does - things that will defo help in getting a visa / a job in canada / anywhere where you need to show you're better qualified than someone else. Their entrance level is set quite high (linked turns, frontside & backside on blue through to black) , but i'll get that black thing down this season (hopefully!)

Also, the one thing that is definately making it an easier choice if the funding - career development loans are stil in operation & you can pretty much finance the entire thing through it (claiming a new board as a piece of necessary equipment! :! ).

I've fired off an email to a chap at the inthepowder site (mike pow - you should be getting an email soon mate!!) - just waiting the answer to a couple of questions then i'll get myself signed up for 2005 12 weeker in golden....Sh*tting myself but also well excited...

Marv, ta for the link. The reason i'm going with the inthepowder coarse (look's like it's a bit of a foregon conclusion.... ) ) is that it's a intensive training & testing programme - you stay there for 12 weeks & get tuition and exams all in. The link you mentioned wold be good for a top class boarder that needed no instruction, but i ain't that good....yet...) 8) Thanks for the link though.

Just checked out that program. Looks good, Is it the one thats £6000? Thats quite a bit isnt it??
Looks like you have found the money route too, there are also Carrer development loans, but i dont know how they compare to the other options.

xbos, if all goes to plan looks like we will be on the same course.

again, i have sifted through all the info mike sent me and in the powder does look by far the most comprehensive. just need to start saving the pennies. (or thousands of pounds as the case is!)

Xbos

Just finished the BASI (British) instructor course. Not an intensive like some of the other suggestions - 3 weeks in total - 1 week a foundation course - to assess where you are at, they then give you pointers and a suggested date to take the instructor course.

Then a 2 week instructor course - which by the end, if you pass, you get an internationally recognised qualification.

They suggest some hours shadowing an instructor etc.

try basi.org.uk if you want to have a look. Or send me a pm for more information.

Total cost - about 1500 squids (including accomodation and lift passes).

The instructors are the bollocks.
