QUOTE (blackfly - 08/07/2009 @ 09:18) HI I thought once youve passed BASI2 u could now work in France, due to the law changing,if im wrong, what extra cources do you need to do to qualify to teach in FRance You can work in France but not as a BASI 2 Instructor. You need to do further qualifications and become an ISIA BASI Instructor. From what I gather there is some hope that BASI schools in France may be able to offer on the job training. |

Does anyone know normally what the minimum number of participants is for the UK based courses to go ahead? i had booked onto the BASI 1 course at the beginning of august in MK but it was cancelled due to lack of numbers even though there were 4 of us... i've now signed up for manchester later in august and there are 6, is that enough to run it?
cheers, |

QUOTE (Amrus - 06/07/2009 @ 19:55) I did the same, quick look on google, picked an all inclusive course and went. Unfortunately I got a little screwed over and the company went bust mid course. I ended up shelling out an extra 2 grand to carry on and get my certs. So whoever people end up choosing to go through it's worth asking a lot of questions about them. Just a bit of bad luck, don't want to put anyone off going out for a season to get qualified, I still had an awesome time. That's awful mate. Who was that then? |

I've done my CASI 2 and BASI 2 so I thought I'd wade in with my thoughts on this one.
If you're unsure as to which qualification to choose, then just get the one that pertains to where you want to work.
- UK or Europe, do the BASI 2 - US / Canada, do the CASI 2
The level 2 at both CASI and BASI are considered the 'international' qualifications, but the resorts usually prefer the qualification of their own area of the world.
Something which hasn't been talked about here is the standard required. Take it from me, the BASI 2 is considerably more difficult than the CASI 2.
BASI say very little about the standard required, but CASI have a good page which shows videos of the standard for their 4 levels:
http://www.casi-acms.com/english/courses/standards.html
As you can see, the CASI 2 is in reach of any half-decent rider with a little targeted practice. The BASI, however, is a much more extensive qualification which requires:
- 35 hours shadowing for level 1 + another 35 teaching/shadowing before you can take the level 2 - first aid, 12 hours - child protection - Enhanced CRB police check
...CASI require none of that. In addition, steeps, bumps, freestyle, switch are assessed with the BASI 2 and not on the CASI.
Hopefully this helps provide some more details and things to think about. Don't ask me why I did both qualifications (too much time on my hands a couple of years ago) but having both qualifications helped find jobs - I've had 7 offers of full time employment next season.
One other important point to mention - those who are qualified at ski instructing and board instruting are chosen first by employers, even before the qualification level or association are looked at.
Hope this helps :D |

A little off topic but I'd be interested to know roughly what proportion goes to the instructor and what to the school or agency they work for - resort based not at an 'indoor slope'.
Cheers. |

Do you mean what wage does an instructor get paid? Next to nothing usually. I'm getting £4.90 an hour for standby and £7.50 an hour for the time I teach. Once you've paid for your accommodation and food etc, you basically break even for the season I gather. |

mmmmm - That's kind of what I thought.
If someone puts in the time and effort to learn their trade and provide a professional service, then I beleive there is a premium to be paid for this and I am happy to pay it. I'm struggling to understand or see how the schools are justifying some of the increases in their prices though....for example:
225 euro for a 3 hour lesson (private 1-3 people) increase of 30 euro from last year and the instructor actuall gets fk all !

Around here (Calgary, Banff) you'd get around $15/hr increasing depending on your certified level.
And in most places you get increasing wages when you are requested by name, private lesson, or the biggie - a private requested by name!
In the US tips go a long way to helping too....... |
