Buy a helmet that fits correctly without the need for a hat.

Hi Wayne,

If you try leaving a little gap between your head and somehting solid, even a couple of millimetres, then sharply accelerate your head towards the solid then, its going to hurt. The greater the speed the greater risk of damage.

Same with Motorcycle helmets, any gaps is a bad idea. The padding cant take the same amount if impact if it's not fitted snugly around your noggin. I have changed my bike helmet cheek pieces twice since I bought it to ensure my head is a snug fit and thats only after 3 years of summer use.

I do know some guys who wear a beanie ALL the time under their helmet in which case you might be OK. They sized their helmet with this idea in mind.

You say "in case" I wear a hat underneath. Is this to just keep your head warmer on cold mornings ? In this situation I have pulled my polar fleece bandanna up and over my head. As the material is a lot thinner than a beanie it didn't make too much difference when I put my helmet on, although it was just a little tighter than normal. Better to be tighter and slightly uncomfortable than having a loose helmet though.

Well some jackets have hoods big enough for helmets, or some people use thin (silk?) balaclava-type things inside their helmets when it's really cold. I mean minus 40 or something, at which point you have bigger problems anyway.

All the times weve been to Andorra and its never been really that cold (well not enough to freeze yer nuts off anyway).

Which resort in Andorra are you doing ?

Helmets are designed to be close fitting, wearing one large enough to fit a beanie underneath it just means that in the case of an accident the helmet wont be working at full efficiency.

its never been the top of my head that gets cold anyway, its my neck/chin/nose/ears so i got a helmet that fit well and i ride with a buff over my face.

I have a Red helmet size large, because I have a pretty big cranium, and it fits pretty snug. I have never suffered from a cold head out on the mountains either, the helmet has a lot of padding and optional ear/back of head covers which give more protection/warmth.

I personally would do as everyone else has said, and buy a helmet that fits as snug as possible. Try on as many as you can and try not to be swayed towards the one that looks nice but doesnt fit as well. If it's something that could prevent serious damage I wouldn't care what it looks like
