Buy a helmet that fits correctly without the need for a hat. |

Well some jackets have hoods big enough for helmets, or some people use thin (silk?) balaclava-type things inside their helmets when it's really cold. I mean minus 40 or something, at which point you have bigger problems anyway. |

Helmets are designed to be close fitting, wearing one large enough to fit a beanie underneath it just means that in the case of an accident the helmet wont be working at full efficiency.
its never been the top of my head that gets cold anyway, its my neck/chin/nose/ears so i got a helmet that fit well and i ride with a buff over my face.

I have a Red helmet size large, because I have a pretty big cranium, and it fits pretty snug. I have never suffered from a cold head out on the mountains either, the helmet has a lot of padding and optional ear/back of head covers which give more protection/warmth.
I personally would do as everyone else has said, and buy a helmet that fits as snug as possible. Try on as many as you can and try not to be swayed towards the one that looks nice but doesnt fit as well. If it's something that could prevent serious damage I wouldn't care what it looks like |
