Fair point, and yes the relative risk on piste is tiny in comparison to park.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of injuries are caused by skier/snowboarder vs skier/snowboarder/snow cannon/tree etc

You don't not wear the seat belt in your car when you driving slowly and put it on when you blating down a back road

Decathlon are doing a matt grey helmet with a brim for £20 ( http://www.decathlon.co.uk/ad-fs-cap-matt-grey-p-id_8155942.html ). For another £20 you can get one with an audio kit. OK, so everyone will know its from Decathlon, but if that matters a few strategically placed decals will save your blushes. So cost really shouldn't be a reason not to wear a bucket.

My personal view is that we are each responsible for our own safety.

People are welcome to try to persuade me to do whatever it is they think will make me safer, but I do want to see the evidence.

The ski areas association in the US publish accident statistics from all their resorts which include fatalities per million rider visits and a lot of other facts collated by an organization interested in minimizing rider injuries. They err on the side of caution, but still their data will surprise most.

Two clicks will get you to their latest summary, updated before the start of this season: the NSAA fact sheet.

I will never ride without a helmet.

It's saved me before and i'm sure it will save me again.

the problem Phil is that people are responsible for what they "perceive to be safe" and everyone has a different perception of that.

i forsee a time very soon where insurance companies will start looking for more ways to avoid pay out it helmets are not worn and there is a head injury. i would rather be hit with a 40 quid bill to buy a helmet before a hol than a 30k bill for hospital treatment afterwards.

and to show how easy it is to not see something coming

When you've been in some of the trauma training I've been in trust me you'd wear a helmet no matter what. Going faster than a sprint then wear a helmet.

It isn't cool or respectful when you leave healthcare professionals to tell your loved ones that you will never be the "Joe Blogg's" you was previously. Yeh, I'm paid to do it but it definitely isn't the nicest part of my job.

Agreed, "perception" is dangerous. Hence I pointed at the data, which is much more reliable. That's pretty much my entire point. Here you have a pretty uniform perception, but it's completely at variance with the facts.

The data are clear on where the risk is, and how effective helmets are or are not at mitigating it. The data suggest that risky people can reduce their risk by changing the way they ride, not what they put on their heads. Facts are horribly inconvenient.

Video: yeah, if I'm climbing mountains I wear a (climbing) helmet for exactly that reason. The objective from stonefall is clear.

Insurance companies: yes, they and anyone else litigating will try to use helmets to reduce their liability. Some employers in Canada are interpreting health and safety law in that way. This is a more sophisticated argument.

I have to say after watching this video a few weeks ago with the other half we both turned to eachother and said the same thing.... 2 days later we both order lids...

I think I was hesitant in getting one before hand due to "not looking cool" but I cannot take the chance of injury and I would put my other halves personal safety at risk either just for the sake of not looking cool....

In fact after wearing it a few times now I have noticed that less and less people don't own one in the domes so really by not wearing one you're becomming the odd one out...

The biggest factor for me was after watching that video, I thought to myself how would I be able to support the family??? Not sure about some but I couldn't survive withoput a wage to cover the costs of living... So a cheap plastic helmet is far better than weeks in hospital and months of recovery on sick pay....

Got to admit I was against wearing one... I've grown up in skate parks and I've never bothered before... but I was young and tough now common sense has taken over...

I would even as a beginner all it takes is to catch an edge wrong, or try to do too much and boom you wake up a couple of minutes later in the freezing cold.

my first attempt (and last) at a front flip resulted in a couple of unwanted minutes sleep. Trying to do too much too soon

The girlfriend was skiing last week - got hit by another skier. On a blue, both good skiiers but the vis wasn't great.
He hit her hard and headbutted her. Luckily they were both wearing helmets - she got a cracking headache and whiplash but her helmet was cracked, if she hadn't been wearing it I don't like to think about the state of her skull.

I know i have said my piece on the subject but today was a shining example of why I wear a helmet! I did my level 3+4 at MK today, after that i decided to have a couple of hours on my own! I bought a new helmet as mine was too small, within 20 mins i caught the board toe edge and landed head 1st on the ground at full speed, it hurt with a helmet on, but if i didnt have one on then i dread to think! Plus the Poma lift decided to whack me on the bonce today aswell!

Point proven haha!!
