Can anyone recommend a decent helmet cam, with a universal clip/attachement. Looking for something with decent storage and video quality, not too worried about the weight of the recording unit as I normally end up carrying butties, water, the missus's spare hoody etc in a back pack so I'll just bang it in there.

Cheers

Have a look at this one. Very good quality HD video, excellent battery life too.

I think it all comes down to how much you want to pay for it - me and my buddies wanted one for when we went away to Bansko but as I had also bought a new boarding jacket and a decent pair of walking boots there was no way I could afford another purchase of around the £100 mark. (and as my pals had no cash spare cash either - we ended up without)

Prior to our holiday I had searched the internet for all HC's and could only find a few that retailed at £100 - £180 all looked decent enough with great reviews - look on mymemory.co.uk - I think it was made by Oregon - their basic model did come down to £75 but again still too much.

Now when we were on the slopes and my mates were ripping me up about not getting a headcam as every other boarder seemed to have one and we should'ave this english dude spoke up and told us about his £25 bargain from Amazon - I WAS GUTTED - I mean £25 - we could'ave all got one at that price!!!

So upon my return to blighty I bought one and so has my buddy - weve also just bought 8GB SDHC memory cards with class 6 write speed for better capture (yet to try those out)

Click for the Amazon HELMET CAM

These were the first images that we took at the chill factore - we need a little more practice - well I do (I thought i was being clever turning my head to the side - but really you dont need to)

DANCAM

Like I say its how much you want to pay

One last thing is that I also looked into the Kodak zi8 which is handheld but had a better spec for the output - bigger price tag to - Kodak Zi8

i've been looking into these for a while. someones already suggested the contour hd 1080 which is around the £320 mark. you can also get the contour hd 720 which is about £100 less. if you google them you should be able to find footage shot in both 1080 and 720, i dont think there is £100 worth of difference so if i do get one it will be the 720.
contour hd

it was reviewed on the gadget show recently and came 2nd to the hd pro which again is about £300 ish. i know someone that has one and it is a great cam with an amazing picture but it seems to stick too far out when its attached to a helmet so i dont think its great for boarding.

me and a mate use the POV 1.5, the camera bullet fits easily to your goggle strap but can also be attached to anything, it supplied with various mounts.

we use an 8Gb SD card which records pretty much the whole of a day, download at night and charge the batteries and away you go again next day. - does make editing a bit tedious having so much crap though.

I used to ride with the recording unit in a backpack but its easier to wrap it in a hat and stick it in my cargo pockets on my pants, changed to this as the remote that it comes with is not to be trusted, found that i was turning it off when i wanted it on - doing it manually means you know that you are recording and not just hoping.

Dont think that it was cheap but its well built and good quality and doesn't look like your riding around with an 80's camcorda strapped to your head

I've got the CountourHD 1080. Bought it over the 720 because it has an adjustable config (apparently bright days on the slope can look a bit saturated on the 720). Couple of weeks after I bought it, VHoldr announced they've got an updated firmware so you can do the same on the 720

To be honest, I have it set to 720 anyway because it saves space on the card (720 = 30mins per GB, 1080 = 15 mins per GB). Even at that resolution, the quality is pretty decent (good enough to pause and take a screen grab - example). One other thing, it doesn't stick out from your helmet bad at all (it's a million times better than the GoPro!)

We have a ContourHD 720 too footage is great and it's so teeny tiny that you barely notice it's there at all. Gives a whole new perspective on a slam or crash

Cheers for the info guys. Like the look of the contour hd 720 but prefer the price of the ones for £100 or so! Tony Hawk appears to have one out for just under a ton.

Will have to see if the tips are good over the last few weeks of the season and how much the tax bill will be at the end of it all.

Cheers

If you're not keen on spending a ton on buying one but want a decent quality maybe check these guys out: Jam Cam. I borrowed one of their cams for a day last year and it was top-notch.

I bought an ATC5K from dixons duty free at Brum airport. It was on special offer. Decent quality, but it doesn't quite film where you're looking if you have it on the side of your helmet. Couldn't attach it any other way.

If you mount it like that it films in portrait, so the picture is narrow. Tried to rotate the camera, but it came loose from the mount.

Wasn't satisfied, so took it back.

Hopefully HD cams will be half the price they are today this time next year in time for my holiday.

I'm a bit dubious about the HD resolution helmet cams, as they most likely use a rolling shutter. They don't tend to handle fast movement very well. I've got a Canon handheld HD camera and that's got a fairly good rolling shutter on it, yet it's still a bit ropey when I try filming using it while riding.
In comparison to a SD camera where a decent one is rock solid with a normal CCD.

I myself bought one of the O'Neill Campacks last season. It's a backpack which has a goggle mountable bullet camera, a media player & a remote which goes to one of the straps of the pack. I've yet to actually try it out though, as I was injured (non-snowboarding related) before the end of the season.

Just arrived in France so hopefully going to try it out soon.
