1) Can anyone recommend a decent quality helmet cam, please? I've seen one that puts the video straight to a memory card in your backpack, but its £500...which is way more than I paid for my board, bindings, boots and any other gear I own.
If all else fails i'll have to ride with my photo camera in one hand and hope I dont fall over
2) Has anyone seen a package where you can by reliable 2-way radios with throat mics included. (i've been watching too much Ultimate Force). Snow and Rock have some in their catalogue this time round, but i'd like some alternatives so I can compare prices.
Thanks |

Thanks!
Damn... wish I hadn't bought an ipod nano a few months back now. Might have to consider selling it and getting those two instead.
just one more question, though. How would you attach that camera to you helmet? Hopefully it'd come with clips etc. Maybe you attach it to the goggle elastic. |

Hi,
Can't help with '1' but got some experience of '2'.
I was attracted by the theory but the practice worked out against it. So I can't recommend a decent throat-mike solution - but not for want of trying. I'm embarassed to find this reply has reached anorak length but.....
- Non-military mikes tend not to be very robust and don't clamp onto your throat as tightly as you need. - Military hardware is expensive if you can get it and largely not compatible with PMR446 radios you'll likely have (PMR446 being the 'standard' non-licensed 2 way system).
In use:- - You probably want PTT (push to talk) rather than vox (voice activated) as throat mikes can be very sensitive and you can end up transmitting accidentally .
- Even with CTCSS radios (the design gizmo that gives them multiple 'channels') that annoys you and possibly anyone using one close by.
- PTT requires a wire and a button. I found a throat-mike with PTT wire I ran down my sleeve and into my glove. Just had to press my thumb on my index finger to activate. - Very cool - but arranging the wiring makes getting dressed/undressed a real faff.
- Curly wire earpiece also great in theory - and definitely easier to hear on the move - but it has to clip on somewhere (more faff) and over time can get very uncomrtable when the earpiece is clamped into your ear by your hat/goggle strap/helmet.
End result? - I gave up on PTT solutions and throat mikes. Went back to a standard Motorola T5522 Talkabout radio clipped to my backpack strap.
Upsides - Dead easy to use. Big, glove-friendly transmit button. - Loud enough to hear incoming messages on the move. - Reasonably robust. (See downsides) - Relatively cheap. - Spares and spare batteries easy to get.
Downsides - If it's properly cold, the NiCd battery packs hate it. They go flat quicker and my experience is it can permanently affect their recharge capacity. - Cold is also the enemy of the clips. They will snap. - Like anything else you take onto the mountain, radios have to be considered consumable. The Motorola units will take a beating but they're not indestructible. |

It's more for emergencies/getting lost, really. I'm going to be pretty much the only person on a snowboard and the rest of the group are going to be skiing. Chances are i'm going to leave some of them in my dust (we're mostly beginner/intermediate level - apart from the people who've been on 2 holidays), so i'm going to need a way to keep in touch.
Taking my mobile out every few min to send a "where r u? text isn't gonna cut it, really. I'll see what reviews the ones in Snow+Rock get.
Thanks for the reply |

I've just purchased one of these
http://www.goprocamera.com/index3.htm
Only have the wrist strap at the moment but looking to get the motorsport expansion pack that includes helmet mounts and a suction cup mount to fit to my board.
Have shot a few test vids outside and first impressions are quite good, battery life is my only concern |

THe POV.1 is the best and its come down in price. I had an Archos setup a while back and don't go there. POV.1 is durable, waterproof, reliable...nuff said.
If you want to know more just search on head cam etc in forums and you will see a few posts from me highlithing the benefits and options. |

Yeah, thats the one thats in the new Snow + Rock catalogue its £549 in there (page 193). Way out of my price range i'm afraid.
But if I get insurance money from something else, though. Muuuaaahahahahah
Even then, it'd only be worth it if I was going to seriously push myself to become an advanced rider in the space of a week. |

Bought mine from the US for much less mate They posted it over and even with the import tax, still way under that price. Just type POV.1 on the web and search it out, job done or if you off to the US, get them to send it to the resort, etc and don't pay the import tax
Oh boarding with an actual camera on your head of arm, just isnt going to dio it, imagine the bumps, knocks etc, way too much hastle. The POV.1 is much more durable and unobtrusive. |
