QUOTE (tombolton82 - 07/02/2011 @ 23:05) with the $299 thing im, guessing your from the states?! my point was that i wouldnt duct tape any piece of kit regardless of cost [/quote> Pretty sure Philw just spends a lot of time in the states/Canada. You do realise the point in these little beauties is that they're rough and ready. The protective housing and replacement lenses are pretty cheap, as they're designed to be used in tough conditions. Obviously. I understand entirely it's a lot of money but at the same time, it faces far more risk of being damaged by just using it whilst snowboarding at all then it does from a bit of duct tape? |

I mostly ride outside the UK (the snow here's just not that good most of the time), so being a cheap-skate I tend to buy the gear where I'm using it. That way if it breaks I can get it fixed and all that. I was just surprised that they're so expensive here - they're charging the same in pounds as you pay in dollars. Ouch.
As far as ski poles being dangerous on ski slopes, you almost had me going there for a minute. Very good. |

Actually, in USD you can get a Hero HD for $220, pretty much half the UK equivalent price! |

We've already used the headmount strap in anger and it's fine for 'riders viewpoint stuff' but a full video of that wouldn't really work. I tend to flick my head about to look above and below me on the slope, so prefer to point and shoot a held camera at whatever/whoever I'm filming while on the move.
I saw the variety of cheap monopod poles on eBay and what folk were saying about them - I didn't fancy anything that wasn't rock solid when extended. After some searching I grabbed a Manfrotto Modo monopod pole from a local Jessops store - if anything it's probably a bit too solid and weighty, but fits in the backpack with the camera still on the end and is fine for all the camera angles I can see us wanting to film, be it self filming in front or high above us when extended, or point 'n shoot gun style when folded in. The wrist strap will likely be binned though.. I can see that flapping about stupidly: |

QUOTE (kerb - 06/02/2011 @ 22:35) I got that exact one, chose it because it was longest and lightest. Trouble is it's just an overgrown car aerial with nothing but a small amount of friction to stop the sections rotating. So half way down most of my runs the camera would rotate 180 degrees - a novel film effect but hardly what I was after. Got looser and more wobbly as the week progressed Got one of these now http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120676555252 it's a little shorter and less compact to carry, but the sections twist to lock and generally much more robust. Mine turned up today and unfortunatly mine is the same. When extended the sections do not lock very well at all and give the lightest of movements, the cam twists round! Rubbish
Will order the one you have mentioned. You say the sections twist and lock in place which sounds much better and what I would have hoped for in a £15 (inc postage) product!
Thanks. |

QUOTE (redline - 10/02/2011 @ 19:53) You say the sections twist and lock in place which sounds much better Yeah, a quarter turn or so and they lock in place. Only downside is it is a little shorter than floppy version, but I guess you can't have everything!
Hope you get on OK with the new one. |

Just ordered a GoPro HD for my trip to Chamonix; gonna be my first time with a video camera.
How easy is it to use it if you're not using a helmet, is there a good way of mounting to goggles etc, or with the head strap whilst still getting a hat over?
Also, with holding poles whilst riding, does it take a bit of getting used to to keep it aligned on yourself etc, and which mount is best to attach to the pole? Oh and whilst I'm at it; does anyone using a monopod use the tripod mount or the handlebar one?
Cheers! |

I don't think goggle/ helmet mounts work too well with snowboards. Last year I used the contour which is a bit less geeky when used up there, but the footage can make you feel a bit sick (and that's not just the egotistical aspects of it).
Riding with a pole is pretty easy. Just borrow a ski pole and duct tape a naked camera to the end, or use a roll-bar mount and duct tape that to the end. Duct tape it because you don't want the thing to fall off in deep snow. Use the longest (ski) pole you can - 1.30 is about right. You need to think about where you're holding the pole and angle the camera so it's pretty much vertical when you're holding it out there on the pole.
This was my 1st attempt, it's pretty easy to use the thing. |

Cheers; I really like the way the pole gives a point of reference to stop the image seeming to be as shaky. Noted on the duct tape too! |

Exactly. I think they may have some image-stabilization built into there too, as the GoPros seem steadier than some of the others. Try watching footage from various cameras: some of it's just unwatchable because of the movement. I think it's worse with snowboards as you have no reference - skiers have those two pointy things in the bottom of the frame. |

Hi. I have a RED Mutiny II helmet with the denim fabric finish. As I can't use a sticky mount without cutting back the denim, aside from strapping the headband mount over the entire helmet, does anyone have any better ideas? How well does their wristband mount work? I'm thinking a pole will probably give the smoothest footage as your arm acts as suspension? |
