#1 Girls board or Mans board? Posted 26/08/2010 @ 19:21 |

Hey all,
I had a couple of weeks boarding in Austria in the winter and I immediately caught the bug. I promised myself that the next time I went to Austria (January) I would be taking my own gear. I mainly freeride but I am looking to try freestyle this winter.
I am 5 ft 9 (175), 82 kg and size 9 feet, so my measurements aren't exactly girl sized but after doing quite a bit of research I have narrowed down my Board selection to either the Never Summer Infinity or the GNU B-Nice.
However, with my weight and feet size should I be looking at Mens boards?
Any advice would be appreciated. |

There have been several threads on this , a girls board is made up differently for leg strength etc , GRILL would be one of the best to truely answer this correctly .... |

Girls boards also have roses, squirrels, nicer fluffier graphics.
i am 100% certain that there are internal differences for weight/height ratios etc but i am also quite sure a lot of it is more down to marketing

I suppose the 'shrink it and pink it' approach doesn't work anymore; manafacturers have to 'soften it and narrow it' as well. When putting two 'equivalent' boards next to each other...eg blue/anthem, feelgood/custom etc...these are the two immediate physical differences between the boards.
TBH if it makes you feel better by all means get a girls board but I don't think that you should not buy a board you've seen because it happens to be made for guys. I know guys with exactly the same stats as you.
Incidentally, when you sort boots & bindings out, you ought to start off looking at girls stuff. |

I'm very similar to you and currently ride a girls board. When I was looking I tried a few out, including a man's one. Was perfectly happy on it, in fact I felt more comfortable on it and throwing it around than I did some of the female ones, they just didn't have the length in stock that I wanted. I've got men's boots (size 8 so right on the border as to how big some female boots go, and wide feet too). I'm looking at getting a board for park use, possibly the www or vvv (female version of the www) and the guy in the shop said I'd be fine on either, but the www might offer a little more stability being slightly wider. |

QUOTE (SnowBe - 26/08/2010 @ 19:21) I am 5 ft 9 (175), 82 kg and size 9 feet, so my measurements aren't exactly girl sized... I think you might have answered your own question!
Womens board tend to have smaller waists to account for smaller feet and because women tend to shift their weight differently on a board, they also account for this to make life a bit easier. However, with size 9 feet you might struggle to get a wide enough board without having foot angles like Terje so I would recommend having a play on a few mens boards. You must also remember that mens boards are built to take heavier riders and so will feel stiffer and more difficult to move to most women. However, I don't think that you will have an issue with manipulating the board as you sound quite strong - if you go for a mens board pick one that is maybe at the softer end of the flexing spectrum to help it work in your favour a bit more.
Never Summer Infinity board is awesome so if you get that I don't think you will be dissapointed. Just get the right size! |

Really it doesn't matter how they designate the boards, the thing is to ride them and see which works best for you, then buy that irrespective of what they call it. |

Hi I have the Infinity and I really love it all over the mountain in all conditions. Just looked up the B nice and I did demo it last year. More a park board. Only rocker. Like the banana. I found it soft and not good on steeps or speed or icy stuff. Probably the B-Pro is more like the Infinity. Rocker/camber so it turns and carves nicely. I haven't tried the B-Pro but I really recommend the Infinity.

I personally don't think there is much difference in women's boards, other than being shorter and a bit narrower, but then any mens/unisex board is the same in smaller sizes.
Back in 2006 I was riding a Burton Uninc. A mate of mine bought the Girl's Burton G-Twin which was released that season, it had very similar construction and felt like it was basically just a girl's version of the Uninc, just a little shorter and narrower.
I'd also say that MOST girls I know who are serious riders, tend to be riding unisex boards, rather than girls specific ones, so that says a lot to me. |

Madeleine,
I've heard so many good things about the Infinity, thanks for the advice on the B-Nice. I think I'm going to stick with the Infinity and Im hoping to test it pre-purchase (no idea where though) as they are hard to come by over in the UK. But even if I dont get to to try before I buy I think i will still be confident about it. |

I think you will like it a lot. I really progressed in my riding with it last year. It is so responsive and I like the flex. I started doing cross under turns and carving with it. I liked it in powder and it holds on steeper icier stuff. I got a lot more confidence to go on harder terrain because of that board.
3 of my friends bought the board-- 2 after trying mine. I just got a call from a friend here in Denver who bought the last one in the shop today! There will be more in other shops and in the mountain stores but I was shocked. I use a 149. I had a shorter board but this was what was left and I never noticed the difference. If anything more stable. I think you will be very happy with it.

Have a word with Tom at Never Summer UK to see if he can point you in the right direction.
