Me & my OH are thinking about trying to get a weeks snowboarding in this side of (but not too close to) Xmas. Thing is I'm not too sure where to watch for snow Is anywhere in Europe a good bet and somewhere I should keep an eye on? Or should we say to hell with jet lag and head to the States / Canada? We were thinking of probably just booking the time off work then seeing where it's snowing close to the time Any suggestions of locations to watch are welcome though.

In Europe late November/early December is your best best. Head for somewhere with a high altitude:

Canada and most of the Mid-western US doesn't get going until Mid-Nov (e.g. Sunshine/Banff is Nov 11 opening this year) , Real snow usually comes towards the end of Dec.

I'd stick with a Euro Glacier/High altitude..... but check that they are open....

What they said; no way I'd be in North America that early. Europe is fairly variable, but the glaciers work - check who is open and when though. My approach is to drive there and then you can go where conditions are best, plus you may get bored with glaciers quite rapidly.

Hey guys thanks for the swift replies & that Guardian article is brilliant pertinky - I did a quick web search last night but wasn't turning much up, prob not using the right phrase in Google Val T was one of the places I was thinking might be a go-er.

Rogue, I have done Colorado in early Nov when travelling to Denver on a business trip & a couple of places were open then ... not the most varied terrain I'll admit but it was still great to get a snow fix so early in the season

I'll go & start browsing around and see what's on offer ...

No worries.

Anywhere with a glacier will be available to you around that time. You can't really rely on the conditions at lower altitude but hopefully there are some early dumps and more of the runs are open. It's something I'm looking at myself, but I'll play it by ear and decide a bit nearer the time.

Mountain Sun do some good early season deals out in Tignes it may be worth taking a look at. By all accounts everyone who has used them has raved about them.

Solden in Austria is a good bet at that time. They usually have the first World Cup races of the season out there in late Oct.

thats the website for mountain suns early season deals.

14 of us are now going out in November.

the hotel is good, the bar is cheap but the Glacier can be variable. you could find perfect pow or sheet blue ice. Both can be fun but for different reasons

QUOTE (iggie - 03/08/2010 @ 09:47)

Val T was one of the places I was thinking might be a go-er.

They no longer have any summer glacier skiing. The resort doesn't usually open til late November, early December.

Thanks Mini, is the park still up in Nov? So if the glacier is a bit pants I can still practice falling on my face off toys Are you guys filling the place? What dates are you going? We were looking to do a week, or is there just not enough open to do that?

At the rate I'm currently *not* finding anything open until Dec it looks like the spare holiday week might have to get blown SCUBA diving instead ... although I had kinda got excited about snowboarding now

we are out Nov 8th to 11th. there is plenty of space in the hotel but on those two dates we have their transfer bus full. You could arrive a day earlier or a day later though and join us.
There is generally a park of some kind out, not always the biggest at that time of year though as they have flattened the summer park and are preparing for winter. we generally find a spot of our own and build a kicker.

Cool, thanks mini ... probably going to monitor the snow reports and start looking late Oct when I know where it's snowed. Considering Whistler, Breck, Banff, Tignes & Val T at the moment but the snow report will dictate eventual destination now I think ... can't wait for it to start snowing
