Freezing goggles!
Posted 24/02/2010 @ 17:28
I'm slap bang in the middle of a 6 day boarding holiday in Finland and am having a right nightmare with my googles.
They seem to be freezing up on the inside and there is nothing I can do to stop it. I've been wearing a silk balaclava to keep my head warm and thought it was that. Nope. I brought 2 pairs of goggles with me (different lens) and they both freeze up. In fact, my Oakley Wisdoms froze so bad at the summit that I couldn't see a thing through them and couldn't board without them due to driving fine snow and -30 degrees with wind chill. I ended up having to chip the ice away to be able to get down and it has ruined the coating on the inside of the lenses. The other pair (Dragon DX) do exactly the same.
After reading that Smith I/O are good at clearing fog - I've bought some of those (felt like I'd been robbed at resort prices..). They work better than the Oakleys and Dragons but still eventually freeze up.
Anyone any suggestions? Someone here has just suggested not covering my mouth and nose as it is my breath that is getting up through the bottom vents and getting trapped inside the goggles. The air rushing in when I board is then freezing the vapour. I might try it but it is so cold up there that I'm concerned about my face freezing and falling off!

I think your buddy has nailed it. By the sound of things the culprit is most likely to be the warm moist air from your breath that's condensing and freezing inside your goggles. One of my m8 wears a foam face mask to keep the cold at bay, it's perforated around the nose and mouth. Personally I just wear a scarf around my neck and occasionally pull it up over my mouth if it's really cold.

yeah if you cover your nose and mouth up then the breath has to go somewhere and will just fog up the goggles, it'l happen no matter what goggles you are wearing.

Thanks guys. It's really cold but I'll try getting one of those face masks with the holes in it and if that doesn't work - I'll see if I can put up with the cold and use a snood.

That should definitely help!
I had a similar problem to you in Canada last season on the first day... my girlfriend who was wearing a neoprene mask with vents as advised in another post had no problems.
