I had a friendly email from my ISP telling me I had blown their CGI space hosting limit by 1GB!
I've managed to get the size down to 600MB, but that's still 350MB too much for what they will let me have. They want to charge me for using their pay as you go hosting package and theoretically I could move my simpleviewer enabled site there with their assistance.
Has anyone got any recommendations for alternative online photo galleries that have the following functions:
Free hosting for up to 5GB Ability to protect images from download, but still shareable with family Able to create albums and add comments Uploadable anywhere in the world, ie not needing specific software Decent image dimensions for the full size images |

Does that just mean your storing your Data (i.e. photo's) in the wrong place?? Is the CGI space not just for scripts? (and therefore size restricted).....
Otherwise, pay-up for the Flikr pro account (USD25).... unlimited storage, etc... |

Ta.
The support guy I spoke to said there's no problem with the photos being stored on the CGI server. Simpleviewer uses php and generates the thumbs and image galleries on the CGI side, no option with that as far as we knew. Basically their standard offering is 250MB for both the ftp and cgi sites, so even if I could move them it would still be a problem.
$25/year is a bit cheaper than the £5.99 a month they were asking for 7GB. |

Photo hosting sites like Flickr and Picasa are always going to be cheaper then web hosting space due to enconomies of scale and the market their in. Are you looking for an all in one solution? As in photo hosting + domain + photo gallery.
I separate the photo hosting and web hosting myself. I've always used Flickr never had an issue fantastic unlimited bandwidth and storage. Here's a summary table of photo hosts:

I have a Hotmail account at that gives me access to Windows Live "SkyDrive". Apparently I have 24.97 GB of a 25GB storage allowance left...
Obviously I dont use it that often so don't know about security, accessability or upload/download limits.
Thought I'd throw it into the mix! |

Cheers, all useful.
Would rather have info based on experiences than dive straight into the biggest name and then regret it. |

Fair enough. I've used Flickr since 2005 to store a copy of all my photo's. Typically i have the following usage scenario's for Flickr: - Backup - To keep a backup of all my photo's. Say if i lost my hard drives or a fire went through my home i'd have a copy of the originals on Flickr. - Display - If i want to show my pictures off on websites or my own website. Privacy options are good - I upload all my photo's private only and release only the good one's to the public. If your a coder the Flickr API is awesome.
Briefly, unmetered bandwidth and storage is a major plus for such a cheap amount. The web organisr is one of the best i've used, sets, collections, tags, noting people and things in photos and geo tagging are all awesome and storage of small video is useful only for camera phones or web clips. The upload tools are ok, the Flickr Uploadr app is useful but could be so much more lacking features like updating already uploaded photo's and duplication detection. The community on there was excellent however i feel it is somewhat diluted as Flickr became more mainstream. And the interface to groups and posting is basic. However i've had my photo's featured on other sites, in travel guides and won competitions all through the community.
Ok i have cupcakes and muffins to eat so this is going to be shorter than the above. Now onto Picasa, dislike the interface for web albums but have always been impressed with the Picasa App. I think that's actually the crux of it, great free app but web albums isnt that flash. If your using the desktop app then the interface between the two is seemless. Storage is 1GB free and 20GB for $5US per year, therefore i prefer Flickr's offering. There is a sync to web option, as it suggests sync's changes on your desktop to the web. Privacy options are thorough and the invite to share your photo's with friends etc is slightly easier to use than flickr's.
Photobucket - Good for Ebay pictures but for photographer enthusiasts i'm not convinced. Pro account is limited to 10GB of space but unmetered bandwidth. It also allows FTP access which is brilliant for creating backups of your photo's. Community is good with photo ratings and groups etc.
Lastly i've never used but heard some good things about Phanfare http://www.phanfare.com it is slightly more expensive at $99 a year for pro account but has added features that a professional photographer might find useful.
This has obviously been my own opinion but i have had no reason to move from Flickr, it has continued to evolve and served me very well.
Now cupcakes. Good luck. Hutch |
