#1 First board set up, need advice! Posted 28/02/2010 @ 18:54 |

So i'm at the age where I'm pretty sure I've stopped growing and have developed a deep love for snowboarding, with plans to go twice a year abroad and maybe some trips up to Scotland and Snowdomes worked into it all. Anyway, I have never bought a board before so I'm unsure as what to get and length etc. I'm around 5"11 and about 10stone with size 9feet. I have a pair of boots already, DC Scout 2010 Size 9. I'm looking for a freeride board as I'm still picking up everything having only been for 2 weeks before, but wanting to do powder, carving, simple tricks. Pretty much having a great time doing everything on the mountain. I would need bindings as well. Not looking for anything too expensive, but durable and for an intermediate standard.
Thanks. |

Asking for advice for equipment on a forum will mostly lead to posters recommending their own gear.
Say what you've put here to a decent local snowboard shop (preferably near a slope), get a few boards that fit your needs/desires and try and demo the heck out of them. But bear in mind that trialling indoors won't necessarily be the same as the mountain.
Choose which feels the best. Just because a board is recommended for 100s of other people doesn't mean that it's best for you. |

yeah everyone just recommends the board they have, very few people have ridden enough boards to really be able to give an informed opinion. However, there are dozens of boards that will fit what you are looking for, its all personal preference as to which is better and impossible to tell you which one you will like. |

That still doesn't tell me what size board I would need! Or what type of bindings would be the best, nevermind brandings I just need some knowledge so I can get out there and select a board! |

you're welcome.
Between 152 and 154 depending on the board and what you want to do with it. As said before its all personal preference, one person will say buy this brand another person will say no they're sh*t buy this one. Go to a shop and get good general advice and then do some searches on here, there are hundreds of threads already asking almost exactly the same question. |

Like I said before, say what you've said here in your local and they should be more than qualified to help you out in better ways than we can do many miles away.
You don't need any knowledge to choose a board, just a decent shop with helpful staff and preferably a good demo. I don't see what your problem is with that. |

hey dude! best advice would be to go to a quality retailer like boardwise, snowboard asylum or snow and rock . . . somebody like that. at snowboard asylum at the dome you can demo boards on the slope too. basically, board length is a function of your height and weight and each manufacturer will have a weight/height range for each model and its length . . . and that's gonna vary from model to model within a manufacturer's range. so you need to go to a shop and they'll do the number crunching for you. any decent shop will have a good long chat with you about where your riding's at and where you wanna go with it, then they'll give you three or so options. however . . . i would say 152 to 154 is way too short for someone nearly 6ft and wanting to ride on the mountain. i'm 5 ft 6 and ride a 154! |

Well maybe you ride a board that too long for you? I'm his exact weight and an inch taller and ive always ridden 153 for all mountain. A begginer is going to have trouble learning on a board longer than that.
Also Snow and Rock arent a snowboard shop, go to a snowboard shop! |

Plus you do realise that your height has no bearing on what length board you should be riding dont you? |

Also, you had something to say a while back about someone pigeon holing TSA for being a crap shop due to bad experiences. Don't pigeon hole Snow and Rock for their size, it's the employees within them that count, and the snowboard guys in Hemel are excellent. |

Hey,
A good place to get some board suggestions is Transworlds Good Wood test. Its probably not without bias but its interesting what comes up. A link to the results is here;
http://www.shorelinesnowboards.com/snowboard-blog/2009/09/02/transworld’s-2010-good-wood-board-test/
I find on the mountain a good grade sintered base is well worth the extra money. I know you said your after a freeride board but it seems like most 'all mountain' orientated boards have a freestyle leaning these days. Apart from Nidecker's range, oh and maybe the Bataleon Undisputed and Omni depending on how you feel about TBT and Batleon's bases. But all of those boards are expensive and for confident riders.
As others have said go to a shop and talk to someone about what your after, for me thats part of the fun of buying a new board. Its well worth trying out a few boards at a dome. Also as we are in March now, shops will have less stock so that will limit your choice - but if your not in a rush the sales will start in about a month or so (with even less choice though!).
Enjoy! |

He said a 154 was too short for someone who was nearly 6 foot, thats nonsense as we all know height has flap all to do with board size. If he had said its too short for his weight then that a matter of opinion but to say its too short for his height is plane rubbish, highly qualified or not.
Why do people always make out that because someone has passed an exam then they automatically know what they are talking about and must be listened to? Its like everyone having their instructor qualifications in their singnature, its like "oooo listen to me in qualified, ive passed an exam"!
And the snow and rock bit was ment ironically.... |

Its like everyone having their instructor qualifications in their singnature, its like "oooo listen to me in qualified, ive passed an exam"! In general I would take an instructor's opinion who works 5/6 days a week, 50 weeks a year over a snowboarding keyboard warrior. You also wouldn't have known that Aytee was an instructor unless PB had told you as it's not in his signature and neither is my qualification.
Granted height isn't the over riding factor in choosing a board but it does play a minor part behind weight. At 5ft 11" and 10 stone I would say 154 would be an ideal size for all mountain. I'm an inch shorter and 12 stone and ride 156-158 on the mountain. |
