in this instance its completely irrelevant if he's an instructor or not, his advice was wrong. PB's implication was that he has to be right simply because he's an instructor without even checking what he had actually said and that im not allowed to question his wisdom because of that qualification, even if what he said is completely wrong.

This thread reminds me. My younger brother is just getting in to snowboarding. He's just over 6ft but very light and skinny but usually given 160+ indoors! When there are scales for skiers, why on earth don't they use them for snowboarders too?

The amount of times I've seen him struggle on a board when he first started only for me to tell him to go back and get a smaller size is a joke.

not wanting to step in lads when the gloves are off but i read an interesting article on stance width and hieght the other day, it basically took your hieght and divided this by your stance width, this gave an answer of usually under 3, they then had listed aload of pros hieght/width and gave their results, there wasnt that much between them apart from the odd one, working on that there is a relationship between height and stance width, a shorter board may not have enough stance width to accomodate a very tall but maybe light rider and a longer board the same with a short chubby rider.

but i know f**k all anyway

it plays a part in extreme instances but generally not. I know plenty of people who are 6 foot plus who ride small boards perfectly as long as they choose the board correctly and its suits their riding style. There is no hard and fast rule, what works for one person doesn't work for another. All i said is that the sweeping statement that a certain size is too short for a certain height no matter what their weight is isnt right.

That would imply that it's mainly leg length than actual rider height that really makes a difference with longer boards. But yes, height is definitely a deciding factor especially with regards to c of g, but i'd have thought that would be exponential (the biggest difference would be greater as the height was greater). The funny thing is in this thread is to me they're arguing over nothing as both have valid points, but in the end it's down to how the poster feels.

I don't think you need to be a pro to figure this stuff out, it's just basic physics at the end of the day.

This topic has gone a bit off course though.

In the haze you're all missing the point. The OP is 5ft 11" and 10 stone, not over 6ft. On personal experience I am 5ft 10", 12 stone and have size 11 feet. I ride 156-158 on the mountain (some may say that's too small) and mid wide boards. I have never have a problem with stance widths on those boards and am usually on the inner threads as I don't like a gangster stance that inhibits edge pressuring. I have a 152 wide for indoor messing about and this does inhibit my riding in terms of width, as the shortness of the board doesn't allow it to widen enough and also it's a bit skitty on hard pack and at speed. Personally at his height and weight I would give him a 154.

In terms of gear advice on this site, I really would only take advice from Grill (which I have done in the past) and Tom as they are at the rock face everyday.

exactly what ive been trying to say all along. 54 is no problem and his height and weight.

And youre right ive said loads of times that only a handful of people are properly qualified to talk about most things on here. However it would be a pretty pointless site of no one else apart from Grill and Tom were allowed to comment wouldn't it, all the threads would be empty!!

I never said that. I said from a personal point of view that their advice would be what I would take over everyone else on the forum.

People are free to post advice on the forums and as you imply, it would be a pretty pointless entity if no-one else commented. However as I've said in the past, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one (and some people talk out of theirs). It's up to the person asking the question as to who's advice they take.

no i didnt mean you did, i ment that i agree that there are only a few people who actaully know enough as to always be trusted and who's advice i would take as well. But all us mortals should also be allowed to dissagree with them or give our own advice as well, if we weren't the site would be pointless. There are plenty of people who've only been riding a few weeks who still give advice, i personally wouldn't tust anything someone so inexperienced said but they are still allowed to say it. Doesn't make them argumentative or that they think they are better than anyone just means they are using a forum for what a forum is ment for. Grill comes across are really abrasive and patronising sometimes but because he clearly knows his stuff and works in a shop he's allowed to get away with it.

I think I'll just go down to a shop and see what they say

Thanks for all the advice and entertaining banter though!

i would say 152 to 154 is way too short for someone nearly 6ft and wanting to ride on the mountain.
i'm 5 ft 6 and ride a 154!

I'm 5'10" 14st and ride a 155 from park to powder. I'm even thinking about getting a smaller board for park.

I have a mate that rides a 152 for park and he is over 6ft.

You cheeky f**ker, you know its all muscle. It's soon to be 13st as I've signed up to run a half marathon.

I like how one instructor said that it was too small but then another instructor agreed with you Nick.
