  #1  First Board - Atomic Hatchet?  Posted 20/05/2010 @ 10:43
Hi All,

After 2 winters of riding rental boards in Canada and during the year at Milton Keynes I'm looking to buy my first board in time for this winter's trip.

I'm around 77kg and 177cm and spend most of my time bombing down runs but I'm starting to attempt smaller jumps and moguls.

I've seen the hatchet suggested a number of times on the forum - is there still a reasonably universal agreement that the hatchet is a good all round beginner to intermediate board which will be as good on the piste and powder as it is landing small to medium jumps?

Also, in terms of size, it seems that anything from 156 up to 159 would be appropriate with the 159 potentially being better sutied to bombing down the piste at high speed?

Hatchet is an awesome board, I had it for my first and rode it for 3 years before changing. It's pretty comfy on piste and I never had any issue with it at speed. Also found it pretty good in the park, though in truth I was only just starting out in the park while using it so never pushed it at all before upgrading.

One thing I would say though, both from personal experience and from reading around, is it's not great in the pow. It tends to want to dig its nose in and flip you unless you lean waaaay back leading to pretty bad leg burn. In comparison to my DH2 (which is a pretty mellow RC board) powder was a bit of a nightmare.

That said, I would still recommend it as a great first board. I certainly wouldn't not buy it if I had to do it again anyway.

I'm between 84 - 88Kg (depending on teh time of year! ) and rode a 162. My new board is a 159. Get a demo if you can to try a few sizes.

Bought one this season before my first trip.

Positives:
- Price
- Holds edge well on groomers
- Decent pop
- Sintered Base
- Stable (at least at the speeds I was travelling)
- Ok in powder (not deep deep stuff)
- Played a little in the park with it, locks on to rails well

Negatives:
- Expected it to be a little more flexible
- Not great in deep powder
- Doesnt like ice at all

I'm about the same stats as you and got the 156 (all around with a bit of park/jibbing). Would recommend the 159 for you.

I'd say size is a comfort thing. I'm 85kg and 182cm and I ride my last two boards were both 157's. I'm rocking a DH2 at the mo which is awesome and I had a K2 Darkstar before that.

157 is fine for hooning down the piste, and is OK is pow. If your budget is OK I'd get down to one of the indoor slopes and demo a couple of boards. Try the '57 Darkstar and the Atomic, there are some good reviews about the O-Matic kit too.

Until you've ridden a couple of boards to have a comparison it's hard to know the right one for you. The guys at both TSA and Snow & Rock at the slopes are pretty good for advise too.

My first brand new board is a Hatchet and can't rate it high enough

I learned on the rentals (LTRs??) at Tamworth and then bought a second hand Jeremy Jones to further my learning. It was a good progression in the fridges, but found the Jones a little stiff and fairly easy to catch an edge - still good fun though.

I took the JJ to Val thorens on our first boarding holiday and got on well with it - it was fast, but still prone to catching edges - not good at speed.
Also I had to be quite agressive inducing turns.

I had been keeping my eye on the Hatchet for pretty much the whole season and put off buying untill I knew I wanted to do more riding more often. Eventually during the sales, I found one the right size at a price I couldn't ignore and bought it.

I've not looked back since and I feel it's really helped my riding and built confidence. I can't see me tiring of this board

Turns are easy and I find it difficult to catch an edge - even if I land a jump slightly wrong, I can easily correct it without face-planting into the snow.

Get one you won't regret it

I bought one at the end of the season just gone for £160 and i can't fault it for the price! Started snowboardin in October with a burton clash, had a week in Austria with that then bought the hatchet as i'm just hittin small kickers like yourself. I'm 84kg 178cm, I got a 156 and i must admit it is a little twitchy at high speed but that just gets your adrenaline goin!

this board is from the 05/06 season so its couple of years old? but if its new and you like it i dont see a major problem as its specs are the same as this years model.... if they dont list the bindings then they cant be upto much? if you canget the "board only" option cheeper than thats ok, if it will still cost the same wiht the bindings and your interested then take them too and wack them on the bay if you dont want them? but i would call and ask what they bindings are and get some more feedback..
..
google for other Hatchet offers to see hwats out there
