I was in Kicking Horse, BC 07 and it got hammered - I missed the pukage in Nov & Dec 06 but that left a 3+m base by New Year and, after the usual Jan dry spell, it continued to get hit.. I think it may have even been a record year with well over 10m total precip... |

Bloomberg reported a much colder winter for the US ... i was interested in the gas price forecast. If they are hedging millions then i reckon they are getting good data... |

I normally get pow wherever I go......in 30 years of hitting the snow I can only recall a couple of times when it has been a bit less than average.. Normally when I hit Cham we have too much of the stuff ! |

Interesting... Seems that the ground snow figures are shifted a month earlier in El Nino years and drop off a cliff in March. So early season looks great but late season looks sketchy. Fingers crossed for the winter olympics 12-28 Feb. And even more so for the paralympics in March! Of course there's a huge difference between the base and the Roundhouse, so things might be much better up there. Did you look at Roundhouse stats? Do they exist? |

Fingers-crossed regardless though! |

Strikes me that we need to stop watching what El Nino is up to and just follow Stuart wherever he is going |

Just did a quick road trip over to Invermere from Vernon via hwys 1 and 5. Just beautiful!
The fall leaves are in full colour in the Columbia Valley and I stopped for a few minutes at the Bugaboo helipad north of Edgewater to look west into the range. The snow is still pretty light on top but the temps are perfect for an early start to winte - just need some moisture!
There's more snow up high in the Roger's Pass, still nothing to get excited about but, again, if we are lucky to get a few storms the temps will ensure that the snow pack will get a good start by November. |

Looks like we're getting some UK snow this week, temperatures are forcast to be an overnight low of -6 with steady -1.53 forcast throughout the day. Giving nightly deposits of snow localised in Manchester, near the Trafford centre... |

I gather a number of the southern California resorts are now open.
Granted, they're on manmade snow but this is only the second time in the past 20 years, I think, that they've been open before Hallowe'en! |

Well, the winter of 09-10 was fairly typical for an El Nino year in the end. Most storms were deflected south towards Mammoth or north towards Whistler, with states in the middle (like Colorado & Wyoming) getting alot less than normal from Dec-Feb. But the impact this had on ski & snowboard conditions isn't obvious from the total snowfall stats. Whistler, for example, had a staggering amount of snow in December, but the warmest January on record (about 9C for most of the month) meant that they had to import snow for the Olympics in Feb. And most Colorado resorts were only 10%-15% below normal in total, but suffered abnormally long periods when they got nothing. Hopefully the same won't be true in 10-11... on which subject I'm about to start a new thread... |
