One of my friends is teaching me to butter at the moment, i just got my nice flexy ride crush 158 from riding a super stiff flow merc 160. The board stiffness does definitley make a difference, i couldnt bend the flow much at all even with my full weight leaning back.
He's pretty much got me started just learning to balance and bending the board without it moving. Just getting used to how far back you can lean and how much the board will take. At first, doing this and trying to grab the tail really helps.
I was pretty much getting right up on the boards tail by the end of my first night on the new board!
Next week, trying it moving |

Your post made me laugh, it sounds like you are starting your buttering on the living room carpet.
My Burton Custom V Rocker arrives tomorrow and i was thinking about doing the same.

I've been riding for about 18 months, but really spent most of my time working on carving and stuff. Never really got into freestyle much, but since i got my park board for playing about in the snowdome, i've been giving it a go and have been enjoying it. |

A lot of people will say that you can butter on just about any board, and they're probably right.
But it's a different matter to learning to butter.
The fact is, it's easier to butter on a softer board, no doubt. A shorter board (within reason) will help too, as you've got less distance between your central balance position and where you want your weight to be for a good buttering position.
Have you got a friend or someone who can butter well? Get someone to watch you; if they reckon your technique is ok but you're still struggling to butter, then maybe your board isn't helping.
You might also find that you're buttering better than you think you are, it's just that you can't see how far the board is off of the snow...
Once you got it down though, you'll find you can butter on most boards you ride.
