I'm an intermediate/advanced freerider (well at least I thought so until I saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2ztryXNIZo&NR=1&feature=fvwp) but anyway... I am trying to get more into freestyle and learn a few tricks and things. Traditionally I have always gone for really stiff boards for carving, even getting men's boards, but now I want to try some freestyle I bought an Omatic Super (08/09), which is a pretty good allrounder. When I try buttering it almost feels like the board isn't flexing enough, or else I'm leaning my weight back too much and then I just lose my balance. I always thought you needed quite a soft flex board for buttering, am I wrong? After seeing that youTube video and watching him carve and butter it makes me think I am completely wrong! Or do I need to adjust the distance between my bindings maybe? I'm not sure what I've currently got it set as. I'm also new to the duck stance (+12, -12) as I used to ride + 40, +20. |

It looks like he's riding a kids board, a small board definitely helps. |

First things first ChrissyT, it freaked me right out when I looked at your profile and saw who you were!
Secondly, I am at the 'struggling to butter effectively' with my board stage. Mine is a Burton Canyon, which is effectively a wide Custom, so pretty stiff. I can get some 'lift' on it, but not much. The softer the flex of the board the better, but there is a real technique to it.

LOL that's so funny!!! Yeah I'll be at Paragon tonight - 8.15 ;-)
Maybe I'll rent a soft board next time I'm at the snowdome in MK and try it out. |

I've been all over the world, Ibiza, Magaluf, Blackpool etc and Tamworth was by far the best for snowsports!! It's intense man!!! You're totally gripped when you're at the top and looking down...

yeah with the right technique you can butter any old plank but its definately easier the softer board you go with.....i cant butter to save my life no matter what board im on because i've got girly legs. |

But it helps with all elements of freestyle and being "at one" with your board. I bet you can't carve either  |

I find really leaning out helps loads - yanno how far you lean when you try to butter and fail? Well lean out loads more
and either grabbing or imagining you are grabbing the nose/tail
the only butter I can do consistently is off the nose
What I do is initiate a healside turn and then lean waaaaay out over the nose
what can happen (but still looks cool) is you end up buttering/turning 90 degrees into a nose press, so you need to turn your head and look over the shoulder of your leading arm to bring the board right round 180 degrees
well that how I get it done |

My mates getting pretty god at buttering but i cant do it to save my live, i came up with the conclusion my board is too stiff... well thats my excuse anyway... I should have my new board by the end of the week which im hoping i'll be able to get doin some buttering on. Its alot longer, well 5cm, than my current board but its what i got recomended. Soon as i get a day off and can get upto the slopes i'll try it out. Got a week in Tignes in march to get some real good practice in though  |
