Nikon Canon / Apple PC / Ford Vauxhall / Andrex Kleenex... all the same and really not worth spending time arguing about.
I shoot Canon, but there's a few things I like about Nikons. True in regards to sports and paparazzi events - the majority are white lenses, but I know Nikons do get some serious indoor studio usage too... I just wanna know I can drive my car to a petrol station and not having to worry about my car having the right fuel nozzle to accept all the standards, to avoid having to buy some kind of adapter to get it to fit later
Compacts for 150ish... I reckon as said before - try n source a Canon G9 or G10. All the manual controls of a DSLR in a handy travel size package - gets my vote and should be closer to 200 than most other stuff. |

I'm replying to Phil here (the quotations seem to have gone crazy):
Yeah, it's all about different strokes for different folks that's the way you get diversity and different styles
Back on topic...
As for digital camera choice: Whatever you get make sure you get something that can be operated fully manually - it really is the quickest and best way to learn. You need to be in the state of mind where the automatic setting is dirty, horrible, and should never have been put on the camera! The control should be with the photographer, not with the camera. |

Changing the subject slightly.
I'm planning on taking my DSLR on the slopes with me on my next holiday. Can anyone recommend me a decent backpack to carry it and protect it? |

I use a chest bag, as it's hard to shoot if the camera's in a backpack. Plus anything more than a shovel-pack is a pain for both chair lifts and helicopters.
If you've one of these smallish cameras discussed below then you could probably get away with stuffing it in a pocket. |

Here's the Lowe Pro TLZ 75. I used a lot of those, but this coming season I'm switching to a different supplier.
And for backpacks, well search here. I use the Dakine Sequence. Burton do similar things. The Sequence is good for riding with and so generally good for active sports. Those are really for "base camp use" in my view though - you may leave one in a cat, or ride to a specific place, but I'd not want to ride all day with one. Some of my video buddies do precisely that, but their cameras and stuff is bigger. |

Revision #2 (Last edited: 05/12/2009 @ 20:10) |
I bought my first DSLR last year and it was my first real venture into photography other than a standard point and shoot cheapy job.
I bought the Canon 450d in the end and have been really happy with it since. I would say get a second battery personally. Mine does last ages but I bought a second one when I bought a battery grip (which I in turn bought because I got my mitts on a telephoto lens and wanted a little more to grip onto) and since buying it have found it really useful having the spare one when not using the grip and going out and taking a lotttt of photos!
I also found the supplied software pretty useful, though it's not required really. So +1 for Canon from a happy user!
Oh and some price perspective for you Andy: I bought my 450d for £380 from Currys Digital, that was with both a price match offer & a £50 rebate offer, which might no longer be running. It also depends on if you're buying it with a kit lens or body only. As said before, most photographers/people who have a DSLR tend to look after the stuff pretty well. I regularly see the kit lens that comes normally with the 450d sell on eBay for £20-30, which is a lot cheaper than a shop will sell you it (more like £50). So, with that in mind you could get it for like £360 or so for the body and £20-30 for a basic kit lens until he buys additional ones.
Oh! And additional lenses reminds me again, buy a bag with room for expansion!! I bought a basic Lowe Pro job which has been great, but since I bought additional lenses, I haven't got anywhere to put them and the telephoto just plain doesn't fit into it, so if you think that might be the case, get a bag from the off with a little more room as I've had to replace mine quite quickly! |
