Hi Matt, thanks for that, although there'll be 4 of us so dunno if you'd have enough space? If you did then we'd definitely sort you out with some beer tokens in compensation

Cheers

Back at the PC now - typing on a phone is annoying!

OK, I think its probably worth saying a little more about the road. You might have a picture in your head of a single lane windy road with cliffs either side and one mistake in the 2 hour drive meaning certain death. That's not actually the case.

For the most part (up till Silverthorne, after the tunnel into summit county I think it is) it's actually a 2 or 3 lane highway. The road surface is well looked after and there are not as many bits with "cliffs of death" as you'd probably expect on a road through the rockies.

The main bit that would worry me and the reason I wouldn't fancy driving it on my holiday is the changes in gradient and the severity of them. It's almost as if you're driving over the top of the rockies at times, climbing to over 11,000ft at one stage I'm sure I saw a sign reading and dropping to 7/8000 at other stages along the same road. The ups and downs are pretty severe (so much so that there are "run offs" at the side of the highway a lot of the way along for truck who are out of control and cant slow down enough to get round the corner at the bottom of the declines).

All four times I've been along my lasting impression, other than its a beautiful drive, has been how much of a nightmare the road would have been to drive (for me personally) as the first thing I had to do after 15 hours of plane travel, tired and in the dark(most UK flights land in teh afternoon / evening in Denver) - especially if it was a bad day weather wise.

My advice to take the transfers is based not only on my opinion of the road, but on the fact I'm on holiday and just wouldn't want that hassle after looking forward to the trip all year and I'd be gutted for the same reason if something went wrong on the drive. And that in grand scheme of things, there wouldn't be much price difference in cost (when you consider free buses, free shutle buses, parking charges etc)

Would spend as little time on the mountain at Breck as possible, IMO one of the weaker areas.

Not sure I agree completely Q, but I can see where you're coming from. In terms of Bowls and Steeps Breck is certainly a bit behind, but if you're a Park person you could easily kill a couple of days there, the parks are superb. Theres also plenty of terrain that is fun.

I guess it depends on what level you're at.

That pretty much sums up my thinking at the mo

Thanks again for all your feedback guys (esp Gaz), it's been really helpful

Righty, I've booked it!

£1250pp for flights, 10 nights' accommodation in a 2 bed condo at Beaver Run, car hire (Dodge Caravan) and the Summit Pass, all booked through American Ski Classics.

I went for car hire in the end because it just seemed like a more convenient way of getting about. Worst case scenario, we'll crawl along the highway into Breckenridge and leave the car there, but I'm sure with coffee, Red Bull and my usual arrogance we'll be fine!

That would be a bargain Gillsy. but that was for parking mate, not the actual hotel.

Sounds like a good plan. Breck gets very busy on weekends with local people, but it's great during the week. Vail or Beaver Creek aren't bad on weekends. My husband and I have the epic pass this year so email me if you want to get together.
