didn't intentionally pick an aussie company, it was just the first one that I managed to find. Will keep looking around though, and since it's going to be next year now, plenty of time to plan and shop around.

I think there are two things in what you're talking about there:
(1) package holidays;
(2) off piste

The first, well it's easy to avoid package holidays. I've been on a few, but not for years as I'm really not a herd animal. You can get away from all that with a bit of effort, and you will get to lots of places which the package people haven't even dreamt about. There are lots of small resorts in France for example which no package operator uses which are fantastic in the right conditions.

Off piste... well many people feel that way.. I haven't ridden on piste much for years, although the occasional weekend or competition can be fun. I'm not hugely impressed by "in bounds off piste" as it's generally skier pisted anyway. Although I'm a climber, I don't like mixing the necessarily cautious approach of mountaineering with charging the steeps... so my solution is cat/ heli-boarding. You can Google for the costs, but obviously you need a certain amount of commitment.

Might speak to you soon then, there's only one left. Guess who

We used Ski Himalaya - it's aussie owned, but everyone you deal with over there are local Kashmiris (in fact the only non-Kashmiri was the chief guide - Dave Watson). I can certainly recomend them - and you should definaltey stay on a houseboat in Srinagar.

You can read more about our experience in Kashmir last year here: snowboarding gulmarg, Kashmir and Snowboarding & Skiing Kashmir Tips - Do's & Don'ts

Hi
Been to kashmir twice and the prices your talking about are nearly double what i paid you just as well go on a package holiday. There are some companys up there with good guides the companys are run by yanks, aussies, and a bunch of guys from New zealand. Great if you dont mind giving them all your money. local guides have lots more experience in thease mountains and they ll show you the real kashmir. Avalanch equipment a must. free avalanch awareness class in a hotel called Pine Palace once a week great for meeting local guides. Two weeks up there should not cost no more than £400 per person all in. Flights out of Heathrow are a lot cheaper.
