Haha! Sorry I couldn't resist!
Don't do it yourself unless you have the proper gear to do it - You'll never get a good finish!
I got mine back from a service yesterday £17 for rub down, teflon wax and edging! |

I would certainly suggest finding out how to do it yourself. I always wax my own boards and find it pretty relaxing (unless I'm in a rush!) and it is certain cheap to setup.
I have only had my board serviced once by a store and they did a shocking job. The edges were white by the end of the first day of use. I do a much better job myself, but it is my own board. |

I suppose it is personal preference really isn't it?
I don't really have the time to service mine atm and I figured I'd give the new place a try - they seemed to do a decent job - though I am certain it was faster before!!!
Mine had some nasty deep scratches on the bottom too from rails and I didn't fancy planing it myself! |

thanks for all the replies guys!!
well I must admit its made me think a bit, if there was a service place in/near chippenham it wouldnt be so bad, but swindon vs DIY, I guess my k2 only cost 41 squid, so would be ideal to practice on,,,
ill have a look at some kits, and vids if i can find any....
any ideas for filling in the top of the board there are a few nicks id like to fill in to keep the board sealed etc,,, |

yeah, nobody wants to go to swindon if they can help it! i should know, i'm there right now!
Demon kits are pretty good if you want to get the whole lot, or buy bits seperately from a board shop (get ya iron from tescos for cheap!)
I wouldnt worry about any nicks in the top sheet, they wont effect the board much (unless its a de-lam) and you'll end up with loads of them when you start riding more! stickers do a good job of making it pretty again! |

will look at demon kits,,,, and stickers, always thought of them for hidding dents n scratches on cars lol but never did, but with the board not a bad idea, but none of the nicks are worth a stcker for now, a good polish might help, |

QUOTE (polaroid - 25/02/2010 @ 15:42) however, the proper kit (cheapo iron, a plastic scraper and wax, beer) will cost less than that! and if you want to do your edges too, then an edge tool (file) is £10... I totally agree. Although this 'I need the proper kit to wax my board' (mentioned quite a few times on waxing threads around the foum) is just rubbish really. All you need is: Asda value iron - £4.97 Cheap office ruler - 49p Scourer and duster - 99p tops Ski wax - £5ish Beers and tunes - model's own
I'd only get my board serviced to repair real damage like deep scrapes/nicks/gouges or for a once a season 'make my board new again' type of thing. Been riding my board since 2002, wax it myself quite a few times a year.
I do have my own edge tool, I probably only use that once a year really, and it cost me around tenner about 7 years ago. |

How often do you find that you need to wax? i got my board serviced in resort and 3 days later it looked like it hadn't been done for months. I'd been told that the man made snow can do this, especially in the snowdomes.
Does any else have to wax job last longer than 3 days, or 2-3 visits to a snowdome? It happens to me regardless of whether I do it myself or take it to a shop.
My base is sintered 4000.
In fact, the base seems to go white after only 1 day on the mountain / a few hrs in Tam. |

Depends entirely on how much you use your board. If you ride every single day, then yes I can imagine after a week or two you'll need to re-wax. Artificial snow creates more spiky ice crystals, which cause more friction and dry out bases faster compared to real snow.
Typically I'll wax my board before I go out on a major trip and it'll do me for fortnightly dome visits for at least a couple of months without any issues.
If your board is going white after just a few runs at a snowdome however or just a days on the mountain, it sounds like it's not getting waxed properly and the wax isn't penetrating the base. Is it an old board - if so a base grind might help open up the pores? |

Nope, it's just over a year old. Will the base grind mess up the structurn on the base, though? |
