  #1  Board Servicing...  Posted 18/02/2010 @ 11:53
My boards been on 5 holidays now and is need of some TLC as the edges are worn and the bottom of the board is scratched to bits.

I've never had my board serviced before and wanted to know what they do and roughly how much it will be. Do they just sharpen the edge and wax the board?

I'm going to sauze d'oulx on the 28th so if anyone could recommend a good shop to go to in the resort, it would be appreciated....

Never serviced in 5 holidays? As a minimum I'd recommend getting a wax and egde done once a week. I do mine myself before I go and it will generally last the week, although I do sometimes give it a quick once over mid-week.

A standard service will generally consist of a wax and edge, although a base grind to give the base some "structure" is also worthwhile. Expect to pay maybe £30 for wax and edge and maybe £50 for grind wax and edge.

I would imagine for a standard service, pretty much anywhere in a resort would do a good job.

It's pretty easy to do the wax abd edge bit yourself, you can probably get everything you need for an initial outlay of maybe £50 - Travel iron from Argos, metal scraper, plastic scraper, edge tool, edge stone/gummy stone, wax, stiff brush, "scotchbrite" pads.

Cheers for the advice, I didn't realise it would be so expensive. I'll let a shop do it in the resort as I don't fancy doing it myself...

Before going out to Val T last month I had my board waxed & edged for £15 through Ellis Bringham in Tamworth. If I remember correctly it would have cost £25 to have the base ground as well as wax & edge.

When most boards cost in excess of £300.00, I don't see spending £25 - £50 a year on servicing (based on one or two boarding trips a year) as expensive.

It's far cheaper than replacing your board every other year because it starts delaminating due to bad maintenance.

I think mine will need the base ground as well. Looks like it's going to be around £40-£50 for the works. Hopefully I can get it done a bit cheaper in the resort...

I've generally found the opposite to that. Can't see it been more than €50 for a board service. I live in Hull and are limited to places to take my board locally. There's only one snowboard shop in Hull and when they sharpened my brothers board, they did a sh*t job...

I found most board shops / service places in val T very helpful and not any more expensive than baord shops here.

I lost a screw from my K2 Sonic Pro Bindings and the place that helped me out didn't even charge me for their time or the parts used to fix the binding. However, the bloke did encourage me to buy a multi-tool (which I did - was the only thing I fogot and typically needed)

£40 service on a £400 board gives you back a £400 board rather than a £50 board off ebay!

I'd recommend riding it as is on the first day then get it serviced. That way you'll remember to get it waxed and edged every trip after that!

I disagree. I've always found it cheaper in resorts especially if you are just getting a wax. Also they're more experienced than a UK shop that may only do a few dozen boards a season as opposed to one that's doing that sort of volume a day/week.

I got a complete service for my board in Austria a couple of weeks ago, 45 Euros. I'm not sure what they did. I had a big scrape in the base which I'd filled with p-tex a while ago. I asked if a grind would sort it out and as there were a number of scrapes it may sort that out. The guy said that they'd heat the board, take out the scrapes and refill the big scrape with something other than p-tex. As the base is hot or even slightly melted (I could have been understanding him wrong at this point) the new stuff will bind with the base properly. If it wasn't for the crappy p-tex still in the base you woudn't have noticed that there had been a big gouge out it. I'd be interested to know the process that went on here. He also waxed and edged it.

Personally I'd buy a couple of edging tools. It's really easy to do and edging is reasonably pricey, you'll have made your money back in a couple of weeks....or a couple of decades in your world!

How hard/easy is it to edge your own board and how much difference does it really make to going to a store?

I waxed my own board before which was surprisingly easy, just put wax on, spread it out, scrape it of and brush, pretty cheap as well you only really need a travel iron which you can get for £10. If it's possible I would much rather do my own edges as well, I'm a firm believer in "If you want something done well, do it yourself"

About £50 will get you some tools to do the edges, but you need one file with pre-defined angles for the base edge and another with pre-defined (or adjustable) for the side edges. There are a few on flea bay.

But I have read somewhere on this forum about having to de-tune edges in some areas (nose/tail??).

My calculation off ebay stuff is about £80 - £100 would get you everything to do a wax & edge service - so for two services a year, it's probably just easier and cost effective to get it done professionally.

You can get an edge tool for about £12-£15. Demon do one. These have predefined edge angles of 90 and 88 degrees that are fine for both base and side edges. You then only really need a deburring stone.

That's cool, could you just very quickly explain the edge thing? I thought it should always be "90 degrees" like it is when it is new, surely it doesn't get worn away? I mean, it's metal..
