Nah, they're sort of aluminium coloured. Or titanium coloured: they screw through titanium plates into the steel inserts and look similar in colour to the plates.

Checking with a materials-scientist mate, aluminium is a bit softer (less prone to brittle failures), but under these sort of loads it's not going to make a lot of difference. You're more likely to damage aluminium bolts in steel inserts, although arguably you're better off damaging the bolts than the inserts.

QUOTE (jmeasdf - 06/03/2010 @ 17:54)

I'm trying to put my bindings on my board but the screws won't go all the way in, they feel very tight. I'm being careful not to tighten them too hard as i'm worried i'll ruin the threads.

Nobody seemed to answer this one. I've seen a youtube bindings set-up vid where they cut out a bit of thin rubber sheet and placed it underneath the bindings to 'stop the board from getting marked'. Not sure I'd ever bother doing that for that particular purpose, but if you're worried the screws are already at the bottom of the board-holes some rubber sheet could give you a few extra mm so you can tighten them right up.
