i'm leaving school this year but i'm still not 100% sure on what to do when i do leave i have two options which are to go and get an aprentership in joinery but this course will take 3 years to complete OR to do a seasson somewhere to get me CASI level 1 & 2.

What do you's think is best to do get a apprentership are CASI 1&2

to get CASI you'd have to go to Canada...

If you have the money, go for it, take a "gap year" and do it, god I wish I'd done a season before settling in a career.

Getting any kind of snowsports qualification is expensive, courses will cost around £7k (taken from a magazine) and then you have to pay for your living on top. You do get a discount/free lift pass though.

Prob with Canada at the moment is that the CA$/£ is super-high meaning a gap-program course is gonna be even more expensive than normal..

Also, it's all very well doing the course but teaching work after isn't guaranteed - ask Nonstop, who seem very keen that you part with your money in their direction, how many of their students end up getting teaching jobs.. I know that very few of the 20-odd that did Powdertrip 06/07 did..

Honestly, I'd usually say do the season/gap but in your case, with little in the way of funds I'd say do the 'apprenticeship' (you'll do much better whatever you do if you try to get your spelling right! ) then get out here.. Carpenters/joiners are always in demand (except in recessions of course) so you should be able to get work without a problem and then live the dream all year round.. a little later than otherwise but without racking up a huge debt that you'll never pay off with earnings from teaching..

Some things are worth the wait.. Guinness for example, mmmmmmmm.....
I board therefore I am..

to get CASI you'd have to go to Canada...

You can also do their Foreign Course in Andorra.

Edit: Or you can look at an internship with Educating Adventures.

Completing your apprenticeship would be the sensible thing to do, but there's still the risk of getting in debt if the wages are sh*te when training anyway. There's a resources link on the educating adventures site. You'll find government sponsored career development loans in there. Do some research and see how it goes
I've been all over the world, Ibiza, Magaluf, Blackpool etc and Tamworth was by far the best for snowsports!! It's intense man!!! You're totally gripped when you're at the top and looking down...

It doesn't have to cost as much as you think. To get my qualifications it's cost me the following (and all done in the UK:

Snowsport Scotland ASBI £350
BASI conversion £40
Child Protection Module £25
First Aid + 3 year refresher £200 (did through work so not cost to me)
CRB Check £20
BASI Level 2 £535
Lift passes £200

Could probably add in around £900 in petrol and accomodation costs.

Yearly membership £60

If money isn't an issue then go and do a season. If it is then get an apprenticeship and see if you can do some courses here in the UK through BASI.

Also... if you're a snowboard instructor, there's a good chance you'd find it handy to have another job/trade for the off-season (unless you end up in the Southern hemisphere). Joinery's probably the sort of thing you could do on a contract/ad-hoc basis so it might well be worth getting trained up doing that first (and maybe do some snowboard instructor courses here whilst doing it, as suggested above). Also more likely to be able to do joinery til older than snowboard instructing (yes I know there are some ancient instructors about, but it's mostly a young person's game).

My ski instructor mate's a cabinet maker in the summer/autumn.

If I was you I would get your apprenticeship and then do a season.

I started off in joinery before moving in to the line of work I do now.

If you go to Canada and do your CASI 1 & 2 and have a working holiday visa for a year your joinery skills will get you work in the summer in the resorts.

I know the thought of doing a season is good, but you need other skills to live on in the summer time to make money, which joinery will pay a lot more than working in a bar etc.

While doing your apprenticeship you never know they might give you time off to do a month in the winter so you can still ride lots.
