#1 Bad Habits.... Posted 16/08/2010 @ 13:53 |

Alright homies,
I learnt to board a year or so ago by an ex girlfriend who used to race, I wouldn't say i'm brilliant but I can get from top to bottom without falling, link turns, carve a little. Have been going to the dryslope for the past 5 months each week and managed to do jumps/box's etc.
However, I'm worried about forming bad habbits, and many of the posts on here mention getting rid of bad habbits early before you develop them and find it harder to stop them.
I might get a lesson or 2 just so someone that knows what they are doing can help me identify anything i'm doing wrong and help me improve me overall technique.
What are some common bad habbits that people do? I already know about kicking the board out to complete a turn, which I do not do anymore (did once upon a time).

my bad habit is not riding square with the board, especially when hitting kickers I have to think about not opening shoulders towards the lip Doesnt matter so much on spins but throws me off grabs sometimes |

Riding dryslope can make some people develop bad habits as they try to force the board around turns. Things to look out for are rotation of the hips and shoulders and ruddering of the board with the back foot. You'll notice when your using rotation as your back hand will start to appear by your back leg and is commonly known as 'handbag arm' or 'mystery date'. You could get someone to play 'wings' with you in which you hold your jacket pockets like you have wings and someone follows you shouting wings if you start to rotate rather than use your feet.
The other main fault that many many people have is a lack of flex in the knees. We need the flex in the knees to reduce the pressure through a turn and if your board is juddering it's usually down to a lack of flex in the knees. |

hiya,
if you where taight by a friend, and dont ride very often your almsot certain to have a few bad habits, but unless your planning on taking an instructor course, and your happy having fun then i wouldnt worry about it too much.
If it does bother you then book a refresher lesson either at your local dry slope or one of the fridges and see how that goes.

there lies the rub.
i am training for my Basi 2 in Nov. i analyse every turn i make and try to improve them. its a frustrating process. and when its complete. i will start again for Basi 3
If your happy with your riding, then enjoy that and bugger what anyone else thinks about it.
Fatbob in Tamworth, Myself at Sheffield, and many other instructors around the country could almost certainly improve your technique but would it make you enjoy yourself more?
if the answer is yes then book a lesson or two. if the answer is no, then your a luckier man than I go enjoy your riding.

Standing up a bit too tall and not getting into the turns enough. Tendency to sit back a bit. |
