Do vegetarians differ significantly to carnivores in how they feel about nature, do BMX enthusiasts get the same things from being in the environment as naturalists, and does a Snowboarder feel the same way as someone who’s into surfing!

Recent studies in psychology show that spending time in nature is good for mental health as well as physical health, simply looking at pictures of the environment has been shown to change peoples behaviour .

So if looking at pictures, of trees say, can influence people to be more generous I wonder if there are different things that people percieve from the ‘natural’ environment depending on what they are doing.

I’m posting this as I think this is something that may interest people. I’m carrying out a pilot study for my BSc that takes around 2 minutes to complete online and I’ll let anyone who’s interested know what I found out at the end http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Closeness_to_Nature

I'll do it but it depends on what you mean by good for your mental health... if it makes you all nice and cuddly I'd argue that's bad for your mental health...

It wasn't meant as a spamming exercise, permission to post was asked for and granted.

I was hoping it might get a bit of a discussion going as both sports happen in different environments possibly for different reasons and diffferent philosophies.

Simply looking at pictures from webcams very often leads to me making expensive purchases of snowboarding gear!!! Direct link there then!

Done !

I honestly cannot think of any holiday other than a Snowboarding holiday that I come back from, where I feel so strongly that I never wanted to leave the place and wish it could last forever.

On occasions I have spent what seems like hours just "taking it all in" while at the top of a mountain away from the pistes on my own in almost complete silence.

For me................ nothing compares to this.

I wholeheartedly share cossie's sentiment. There is nothing like the feeling of being away from it all at the top of a snowy mountain, strapped in pondering the lines you're about to carve and not giving a toss about what anyone else in the whole world is doing.

I've never surfed, but I have a friend who surfs and believe he experiences the same feelings as I do as he paddles for a wave (or whatever the cool surfing term for doing this is). I dont see the alllure of it myself but i'm sure the coastline and the movement of the ocean invoke the same emotions in him as the view of a majestic, freshly laid powder trail through a tree-line does in me.

This post has become too profound, time to bring it back down a notch... TITS.

I do both...spend summer surfing and winter boarding...It's a hard comparison to make and my choice of a favourite changes a lot...I'd say if i could have perfect conditions every day i.e. thigh deep pow all season i'd probably pick snowboarding, but if it was on piste vs decent waves, surfing would win...The feeling of dropping into a big wave is unmatched in terms of adrenaline for me....i guess the 2 sports give different feelings...i don't know it's too hard to compare haha

I do both and ride with people who do both. What was the question again?

Neither sport has much to do with nature. You have to fly there by 'plane which is terrible for nature, and then surfboards are nasty synthetic things, as are snowboards.

Comparing them? Well, one works on water, the other on snow. So if you're in a place with water, it's best to surf, and if there's snow... well you can see where that's going. It's hard but certainly not impossible to do both on the same day. Variety, spice, life of.

This is what our tax pays for a subjective survey to tell me that going surfing or snowboarding makes me feel good...

As for comparing surfing with snowboarding... apples and oranges. As Billabong said "Only a surfer know's the feeling". You'll need to be more specific.

I agree the "sports" element hasn't got much to do with nature but I think what this guy is driving at is the connection between humans and nature when you are "out there".

Maybe if I had a wardrobe in my bedroom that I could walk into Narnia for a quick shred each time I was stressed then that would make me a better person and to feel at one with my natural surroundings
