To answer the question... It's all about the person... I'm not keen on nature and all that environmental crap... I do like the view but that's about it... I like taking lifts, flying in planes (and helis) and riding in cats... al of which are pretty bad for the environment (supposedly)...
I don't agree with carbon footprint and the general scare mongering that lots of idiots appear to buy into but that's me... |

QUOTE (hutchy - 05/03/2010 @ 01:18) This is what our tax pays for I hate how everytime anything remotely state sponsored is debated someone has to use the phrase "this is what my tax dollars pay for" or the equivalent. Yes it is! Diversity in education is important and this of course links in to one of mankind's most pressing political issues: climate change.
Personally I think the sports do have a lot to do with nature. The entire playing field for both sports is entirely dependant on the condition of the natural environment. Sure most of us dont hit the slopes because we love fuzzy marmottes and we feel "connected" to every living creature on the mountain. Nature is our playground though and without it's varying occurances our sport would be no fun. |

Hi The pilot study simply looks at how close a person feels in relationship to nature. It's not about making people feel guilty for what they do.
It's important not to get caught up in too much detail as it would be nice to get a broad range of opinions from people whose voices are normally drowned out by those who shout loudest. It's not even about any particular moral stance its simply about is there a difference between people whose main interaction is a particular interest and does this shape who they are?
E.O Wilson (biologist) hypothesised that human beings have a 'love of nature' what he calls biophilla. This would be because it is beneficial to people to be interested in and feel something for what essentially allows us to live and our children to continue after us. Without going into too much detail and boring the pants of everyone it's essentially about survival and management.
What I wondered partly was that in an activity such as snowboarding or surfing where I presume 'reading' the conditions, i.e. type of snow, direction of currents, temperature, weather etc., means that one focus's attention to a greater detail to do it well. Does this create a feeling of being closer to the planet as well?
If you take the survey then its best just to not think too closely about the questions and go with a gut reaction as it gives a truer reflection. Sadly I can't give you your own personal measure at the moment and for a one off basis for an individual probably wouldn't be that accurate and would need to be done over a period of time |

i have surfed for many years and snowboarded for a little bit less, forgetting about carbon footprints etc, i recon surfing is closer, the vast majority of snowboarding is in a resort, on piste, your relying on man made runs lifts etc, obviously BC is an exeption. surfing is 100% nature, there is no external influences (apart from the odd man made reef here and there), you have to use your own power to paddle out (one thing many people under estimate), catch the wave and ride it.
give me an epic snow day to perfect waves and i think i would pick the snow, only reason is the amount of riding that can be done, but there is no comparison to dropping into an overhead wave and making it!! |

I agree totally, although I live for snowboarding I don't find it gives me the same release and stress relief as being out surfing. I think the reliance on man-made features, infrastructure etc will always remind you that snowboardings a fairly synthetic sport although if you paddle out in mid-january in perran on your own you cant help but feel away from it all and isolated in a good way. That for me is the relationship with nature that only surfing can give. |

What do you look for and what would you say you notice in each environment? Would you say that you were aware of other things occupying the same place. It would appear to me that you probably have more time to think surfing yet when you snowboard presumably your senses are quicker and more highly attuned or do you just switch off and let your body take over? |

Perhaps snowboarders aren't closer to nature than surfers...but mountain bikers are!
Out for a group ride this morning. Nothing like the sound of birds, the thump of tires over rocks, the splash of mud in the face, the smells of spring. |

I'd say surfing because of the fact you can wear next to nothing and do it, although a fresh mountain is pretty close to taking the cake to be honest |
