I'm heading out to Bansko on Sunday - only for 5 days but I can't wait!

A friend of mine is managing the St John Hill SPa Hotel so it wazs very cheap for us - has anyone stayed there? Apparently it pretty good!

In regards to currency what is the best to use? Lev or Euro? I know the excahnge rate is way better on the Lev but I want to be sure I can use it!

So I went to Bansko last week and this is my opinion of it!

Monday - loads of rain meant that the slopes were icy at the top and slushy at the bottom, park was closed due to high winds!

Tuesday - Snowed lightly for most of the day which was nice as it meant the icy crap from the day before was covered in a few inches of powder - we just got wet! Park and the upper slopes were closed due to bad visibility

Wednesday - Really busy due to it being a bank holiday - Bulgarian independence but the slopes were great and the skies were clear and sunny which meant for a great day of riding and some park action! Virtually no wind either which was great!

Thursday - Was clear at the top but massively foggy in the mid part of the slopes - tiny bit of snow overnight made for an inch of powder but it covered some seriously slippy ice! The fog crept up the mountain during the day and soon you couldn't see more than 6 or 7 feet infront of you - had some great runs once everyone deserted the slopes but then we decided to call it a day early!

It was a great and very cheap break and we got some good riding in, Bansko itself is nice but you pay through the nose the second they realise you are english - you have to have the balls to say " no way I'm not paying that!" but other than that it was good!

Was told by a local hotel owner and the major (or bulgarian eqivalent) that the resort can currently cater for 70,000 people and the gondola can only take 7,000 per day - that means there is a ban on further buliding and confirmed plans for another gondola and some new blue and red runs! Who knows when though they wouldn't say!

"Tourist prices" quite common, especially in eastern European countries, normally if you refuse they will charge you normal prices but you have to look out for these people!

I also read that they have banned all building permissions for the town.. its pointless now due to lack of slope access, although the town has seriously benefited from foreign investment!

Having started the thread, thought I would add my review too -

Bansko is a game of two halves. I had a similar experience in terms of the weather and slope conditions to DazBock, though it was busier when I went by the sound of it. At times the runs were packed! Its a decent sized mountain, I loved the black run and the Shilligarnika runs / eating area.

The Gondola is a real pain in the ass, it took nearly an hour one day and about forty minutes average, but everyone has to que, so you cant winge too much, its just a waste of the day thats all! I know. Get up at 0630 and get there early, but I dont wanna get up early on my holiday! Its all a bit disorganised really.

Food was alright. Overpriced beyond belief at times. People? I heard half super friendly, half look at you as if you left a lincoln log in their drink... This was true.

All in all I really enjoyed it. Its true, Bansko is a bit different.

The thing is, I would not go back. There is simply not enough there, to get excited about going back. I would go to the Alps for just a smidge more... I went to Tignes in Jan and only spent slightly more.

All in all, Bansko scores a 7/10.
