QUOTE (Flinnster - 30/07/2011 @ 00:50) LOL sod the details mate. You can ride, now enjoy it. See the quarter pipe at the bottom left? That's your next challenge! Enjoy! exactly mate.
if somebody posts a video of them riding its for 2 reasons, 1. a belly rub, 2. advice.
my apologies for giving him both, his opening post said he needed to get lower and i offered a small piece of advice, apologies again if my advice wasn't in the correct terminology. i didnt post "you need to be flexing, then extending as your fore/aft, changing edges at 1 or 2 on the clock................" as i aint got a clue how to explain the dynamics and biomechanics of a simple snowboard turn. it just looked like he would have benifited from being lower and the only way i could explain getting lower without breaking forward at the waist was to drop or sink into his ankles.
if this was reversed my reply may have gone along the lines of "yeah russ, he's doing great. ive been telling him to get lower but with a bit more practice he will, but ive been telling him to ........" that would of been a polite reply.
bob says "flex the knees", grill says "bend zee knees has always been wrong", whos right? personally i'm not bothered as long the're happy with it, but to be honest i respect and will listen to anybodys advice as long as its not steer with your shoulders! if i posted a vid of me riding i know what advice i would get as i have watched myself, rear knee slightly in and shoulder very slightly open. tried my best to stop it, but its just there and i can live with it.
i have been training karate for about 4 years and if all goes well (injury free), i will be going for my black in november, i am not a karate instructor, but its expected of me as a higher grade student to offer advice and help to anybody that needs or asks for it, maybe my advice isnt in the same league as my 5th dan teacher but its still advice and most people listen and take it onboard, but if someone a higher grade than me came running over and questioned me and tried to "belittle" what i said, my instructor would shoot him down in seconds. a quiet word at the side line would be perfectly acceptable tho.
warrmr.
cheers for posting the vid, you should be amazed, ive seen people riding for 10 years that cant ride like that and to have improved that much in a short time, i am assuming in a fridge, is something to be proud of
if fatbob has been teaching you or just giving you a few tips when your there, well done fatbob aswell (belly rubs all round).
regards

I think everyone who has given advice in this thread is trying to make the same point get lower and pressure your edge. But you all have your own way of describing things, I guess that its one of those things that need to be shown rather than put in written word.
I can't wait for thursday to come around again so I can try out some of the tips and see how that goes. |

Russ, he is doing great. Sorry if my post seemed inpolite it was not meant that way and my intention was not to call you out. I have never heard the term 'sink into your ankles' and was merely trying to figure out in my own head what you meant and in relation to what turn. |

QUOTE (fatbob - 30/07/2011 @ 21:22) ... (bend zee knees has always been wrong). Really? Check CASI level 1 text, page 13 "...eyes looking forward, arms quiet, knees flexed..." etc.
On the original videos, looks like he was well taught.
As he noted, he looks a little upright and stiff. It's hard to crank the board over on those little slopes, it's much easier to carve at high speed on an open piste. As soon as he gets on piste with bumps and stuff he'll loosen up and nail it. |

My technical posts always talk about flexing your knees, it's the only way to control the forces that gravity apply when sliding down the hill and hence why you get judder if you're not flexing enough. |

no worries Fatbob,
after having been kicked and puched in the face, 3 times a week for the last 4 years i'm sure a little internet banter wont harm me it just sometime seems that no one is allowed to give advice on this forum without having to explain themsevles in detail (could be lack of snow) and with not having any instructor training (been tempted and asked but with the nearest fridge being 100miles or so away and prob not my thing anyway) my terminology is probably pretty poor. all i meant was to get lower, drop his waist a few inches with out changing his body stance on toe and heel.
he is doing great! i wish someone had taught me like that when i first started, but then step in bindings were the new thing and foot pedalling wasnt heard of, very hard to loose bad habits once they have set in.
regards

I'm sure we're all talking about the same thing, I just thought that was a surprising thing to say and that it at least needed some explanation.
Skiing? You need to bend your knees to get your weight over the balls of your feet there if I remember correctly. You have to bend your knees and push them against the front of your boots though: bending them and sitting on the tails of your skis is not quite what's meant when people try to get you to flex. |

No. Simply bending your knees will put you on the tail of your skis. The ankle flex is what's important, especially as you close out a carve (if you can't flex your boots which is achieved by bending your ankles then you'll skid the turn). As I said before the knees will bend automatically when you flex your ankles, after you have the proper force and feel through your ankles you can then concentrate on actually bending the knees. |
