What were you doing?
I wear MotoX 686 Bombers - not quite as hard-wearing as something more fit-for-purpose, but for the price point I get to use them MTBing and snowboarding. No doubt they won't save you on a big fall, but they ease the passing of minor bumps. Some of my mates have the Red impact shorts and speak highly of them - you'd probably get some good deals on protection gear at the mo. |

Forcefield action shorts are great, there is a 2 layer or a 4 layer version, good enough for the U.K. freestyle team!
Or these offer good coccyx protetion;

Ah, mini are do those shorts use that gel stuff?? I was looking at some last year in Noah's, can't remember what make it was though, looked good stuff. The impact shorts had gel stuff in them instead of hard armor so it's lighter and flexible until you whack it (like when you bail) then it goes solid and absorbs the impact. Was going to talk to Ernie about how they'd be with the impact of say a box edge and maybe try some this coming season.
I'm using the Red padded and armored shorts at the moment and I have to be honest they're not the most comfortable and yes your bum is gonna look big but if you bail badly off a box / rail (like I've been known to do on more than one occasion) then the armor plates save your thigh/hip from a nasty bashing. I've given myself a few hard landings from kickers with no lasting repercussions too, so they work. Now I'm not saying it doesn't hurt, hurts like hell - speed + gravity + me from a height tends to have that effect - but it tends not to bruise much if at all & you can go riding the next day again ... that's the main point I reckon

I believe that d30 works well unless it's a pointed impact where it is much less effective, which is why d30 beanies are thought to be a bit dodgy, in terms of real protection, it's al fine until you hit the wrong shaped object or whatever.

True but a piercing injury is unlikely to be stopped by impact shorts. They are there to reduce the impact from a slam. These do that really quite well

Yep I guess the thing about a sharper impact is it answers more Iggie's question about - how they'd be with the impact of say a box edgen - rather than the original poster. I was quite tempted by them myself, although I have heard that they tend to be a little on the heavy side, how does that correlate with your experience of them? |

I find them more comfy and lighter than the red shorts I also have. Only negative is that I can wear the reds as normal shorts as well. U have fallen in both types and think both are similar for impact resistance. All either do is spread the impact. Neither Will save a life but they seen to do a good job of minimizing the bruises |

They do sound good, especially if they are light as you say! |

I can't offer a suggestion for good impact shorts, but I can tell you the ones that I used to ride with don't seem that good...
I have the Dainese Impact shorts - the biggest, hardest padding on them are covering the coccyx and the thighs. Whereas the padding on the fleshy part of your butt, the cheeks, isn't that great. The plastic cover for the coccyx sometimes gets in the way a little...
I always thought the R.E.D ones looked better, but I've never tried them so can't say... |

Or shove some foam camping matt down the back of your shorts. |
