I started boarding about 11 years ago and went with my now wife who had skied for 10 years already. She had always gone with her family and had gone into group lessons for years. She told me that I needed to go into group lessons and did that for my first four seasons/weeks then had private lessons after that.
A lot of boarders (I'd say more than beginner skiers) just get their mates to teach them. It's just not a good idea. It's like getting your mates to teach you to drive, you would be able to drive a car but you would be crap and you would smash you car up pretty quick.
Since the domes have started springing up everywhere more and more people seem to do the "learn to board in a day" and then think that they are ready to take on a mountain. Yeah you can snowboard but goig into group lessons is a must and is something that any beginner should do.
That's not a dig at you or at anyone who teaches in the domes. Spending a oner on group lessons for 5 days isn't much in the grand scheme of things when you are spending best part of a grand to go away for a week and it's money well spent

I was doing a good 30/35 mph when I hit a french bloke and launched him over my body! if someone cuts across you at speed then you can't do a lot about it!!

Sorry, but no, thats just your opinion, there are far better riders around than you that have never had a lesson in there lives. Just becouse its your choice to go down that path doesnt make it a must for everyone. it also doesnt automatically make self taught riders dangerous.

fairly sure jake burton and tom simms didnt spend a week with ESF

Yes you can.

Control of speed and direction. sounds like you failed on both counts and should stick to snowblades. They're designed for people with no sense of control.

yeh good one buddy, were you in the situation I was in, eeerrr no!

200 metre slope to run across 400 metres of flat to reach a gondola with 3 minutes before shutting. I think you would trying to get some speed.

straight lines the EDGE of the slope, saw the skier turn left away from me then guess what, someone decides they are cutting in at the side of the slope!! dug my board in as much as possible to avoid collision but inevitable happened.

Bit defensive eh?

I wouldn't get myself into that situation myself, but judging by some of the things I have seen on the slopes I could see how it could happen - racing for last lifts is always a time to be on your guard. But I stand by what I said you should always have control of speed and direction. I think it's in the FIS code somewhere.

dont like to be criticised when the situation is unknown. Im not an idiot trying to prove a point with speed and daring. I like to be smooth and put turns in but in some situations things go wrong.

sorry for being OTT

I would say that everybody learns differently and group lessons can be great but you can also end up waiting ages for others and not getting the focus you get in a one on one at the dome. an the mountain is not as scary as people make out there's slopes for everyone and dependent on season lots of space to make mistakes and get on.

the boarders i have learnt from have many years of experience and have all helped get my technique down, but yes you can get someone who talks sh*t just to sound good.

time on the slope has benefitted me far more than having lessons every season, but thats me.
