The Snowboard Test 2012

Four days at the industry snowboard test is enough for my system to cope with. How people survive the week I do not know, but those four days resulted in the biggest end-of-winter comedown you can imagine. It’s a pure mashup of epic shredding, epic parties and super rad times with super rad people, which makes it the sickest end to winter known to man.

Every year the Snowboard test brings the ultimate season finale to the Kaunertal Glacier by day and the sleepy farming village of Feichten by night. The empty slopes of the glacier laid out gleaming ahead of us, awaiting the entire snowboard industry to rock up and show off what they’re made of – brands, media, stores, pro riders, and those just along for the ride.

The perfect park setup from the Kaunertal park crew sends riders into dribble-mode while the lack of anyone else riding means lift queues are non-existent and you can hit up uninterrupted spine-tingling flatlines from top to bottom. Plenty of side-hits add to the fun pot, plus the golden gem of the roller being open at the bottom means everyone gets on the next lift wearing a massive grin.

The conditions could not have been better for us, with post after post of new snow reports filling our newsfeeds in the upcoming days. Never had they seen so much snow and never did we expect powder days in May. Catching bank holiday untouched freshies is a dream in itself – let alone having a candy-cane of hundreds of next season’s boards, boots, bindings and outerwear to get your paws on, to rate and slate, from some of the biggest brands in snowboarding.

But if that wasn’t enough those brands are there to take care of your needs up the mountain, from Westbeach’s bacon sarnies to cure the hangover and Vans’ waffles for the much-needed sugar fix, to the hair-of-the-dog après-Steigl and Jager provided by Analog. Big props to the DC crew for their magic hot-chocolate-and-rum mix, and the Butta boys for waxing everyone up to make the slush glide like it was, er, butter! The Whitelines and DC rail jam ended the week in style for many, with Andy Nudds taking top spot and Matt Macwhirter taking the people’s choice cash back to the bar.

By night, the après parties in the Pfiff Alm ensured the cows in the sheds didn’t sleep, and that your next day’s ride up the mountain road was even harder than the one before. Only the town church’s continual bonging would awake most from the beer-and-jager coma at 7am, without fail.

The first night’s test meeting started you off as you meant to go on, with beverages flying to everyone you’d not seen all season. After epic journeys to Austria, most had sworn to have one beer then collapse, but one Austrian beer always turns into several, and then some jager – and that’s how the week went on.

Night two at the Whitelines party ensured your beverage levels were topped up and your hangover was forgotten for a short while, with plenty of tunes laid down, while the pub quiz of all pub quizzes sorted your playlist for the third night, thanks to the guys at The Reason and Westbeach UK. Standard pub quiz met ridiculous challenges to make sure no one was sitting quietly, from multiple human pyramid action to naked-inducing clothes swaps. The draw-a-marmot crown was held by the Butta boys but the dance challenge was officially one of the biggest crowd-pleasers – whether that was to work out whether that was actually how someone dances, or the devastated looks on their faces when they got the death tap.

Once again the Snowboard Test organisers got everything right and everyone left more than happy – with brands seeing riders stoked on their 2013 kit, pro’s throwing the kit properly in its paces, and media and stores leaving with a new wish-list of next season’s must-own for themselves as well as the public eyes.

Post-test news feeds are lined with ‘best test ever’ and ‘best week on snow all winter’ commends, with plenty of photographic evidence and edit teasers backing up the claims hands down. Those who didn’t make it out to the test this year are wallowing in a pit of grief, while those who did make it are lying contently in the recovery position, with gleaming goggle tans, knowing they’d not only ended the season with bluebird freshies and epic end-of-season parties, but in the knowledge there’s no doubt next year’s Snowboard Test, as always, will be even bigger and better than before.
