Switchback Bindings – First Look!

The guys over at Cab Five Snowboard Shop have put together an article giving GONEboarding readers a quick first look at the brand new Switchback Bindings.

Switchback is Bataleon’s new binding brand that has been eagerly anticipated by many snowboarders since they were announced last season. Ridden by the Helgason brothers, Switchback are a completely different take on the usual process of purchasing a pair of bindings, in that you don’t actually buy a pair of ready made, boxed bindings. The whole idea behind the new brand is customization and providing each rider with his/her own individual, unique pair of bindings.
For those who’ve not been closely following the brand up until its release last week, each component that makes up a pair of Switchback bindings comes separately in its own box. This means that you can swap out any parts to change the feel and look of your bindings in a matter of seconds. Baisically, you purchase a pair of Baseplates, Straps, Padding and Highbacks that come in a variety of colours, and build up the bindings yourself. You can also choose between the Standard or Jib Padding as well as the Standard or Forward Lean Adjust Highbacks. The good news is that only the baseplates come in different sizes meaning you can buy any of the other parts and they will all fit together – super simple!

Another innovation that Switchback Bindings have introduced is the hardware-free construction, meaning you don’t need any tools to put everything together (other than attaching them to your board)! They’re really simple to put together, and once built, they’re extremely solid. We had a few concerns about the durability of this construction method but they were completely put to rest when we got hold of them; the build quality on these bindings is astounding and will definitely hold up to general abuse just as well as other brands.

When you purchase a set of Switchback Bindings, this is what you need to buy:

Baseplates
These come in pairs in Medium or Large. The medium are for a UK 5-10 and the Large are for UK 8+. The baseplates come with an attachment so that you can ride NoBack (with no highback) more securely if you wish!

Straps
The straps come in one size and you get a pair for each foot. The materials used here are really high quality and the toe strap is a toe cap design meaning these will give you a really snug fit over the front of your boots.

Padding
The padding comes in pairs and is available in Standard or Jib versions. The standard padding is, well, standard padding and suitable for all types of riding. The Jib Padding is double the thickness to absorb heavy landings and generally give you a softer, more playful feeling underfoot. The Jib Padding comes with a contrast colour logo design.

Highback
Again, these come in pairs and you can get the Standard Highbacks or the Forward Lean Adjust Highbacks which come with a rubber mesh over the open back. The forward lean is extremely simple to set up and is also completely hardware free!

All of the parts come in a range of colours; black, white, red, orange and blue so that you can create the colour combo of your choice, or even have a pair of solid colour bindings if you want!

The Switchback Bindings have really impressed us with their simple, stylish design and ease of use. They are so simple to put together that you can assemble a pair in 5 minutes and then you can swap the different parts out in seconds to suit different terrain and riding styles. The thing that has impressed us the most about this new brand is the build quality and they completely put to rest any concerns we had about the durability of the hardware-free bindings. This shouldn’t come as a surprise seeing as they are Bataleon’s new project, a company whose quality, Austrian-made snowboards have taken the industry by storm over the last decade. The materials used for every part have a really high quality feel from the matte plastics, powder coated aluminium ratchets and PU leather straps. All of the parts fit together with an extremely tight and secure ‘snap’ and there’s no chance of these things coming apart.

You can purchase all of the parts needed to create your own unique pair of Switchback Bindings here at Cab Five Snowboard Shop
