Salomon Oh Yeah 2013 Review

Ripping off the factory wrap in January 2012 for the 2013 Salomon Oh Yeah, I was like a child at Christmas. Since then that stick has taken me from piste to park, freezer to mountain, from ice to pow, and there's nothing I'd change about that board in any condition. Here's what happened.

Conditions
I first rode the Salomon Oh Yeah 2013 out in Serbia, the day after they declared a national emergency due to the immense snowfall and ridiculous temperatures. The powder was super deep and soft, the park was slow, but again it was soft, and it was ridiculously cold.

I then took the Salomon Oh Yeah 2013 to the Definition Freestyle course in Milton Keynes.

Handling
I rode the 2012 Salomon Oh Yeah out at The Snowboard Test in 2011, and it came out in my top 3 boards of the entire test, so to get my hands on the 2013 Salomon Oh Yeah in January, it was like Christmas had come 11 months early.

What I liked most about the Oh Yeah is that it does exactly what it says on the tin – make you say 'Oh Yeahhhh' – no matter where you are on the mountain. I was always in control riding – whether I was flatlining down the piste, carving up fresh pow, or battling the elements of a Serbian blizzard.

Approaching features was really easy as I was always in control, and I never washed out on landings. There were times I wanted it to go faster, but it may have just been the cold which held her back, as whenever I flatlined, I never felt a shudder from the board – it was just a smooth, easy and controlled ride.

Pop
Pop is what the Oh Yeah does best, fact. This is what surprised me most about it being able to cruise the mountain so well – because for freestyle, I couldn't ask for anything better. Popping off kickers, mounds on the piste or random objects which came my way was super easy – and the landings I found very controlled too.

Flex
Flexwise, the Salomon Oh Yeah is one of the flexiest out there, without losing the control you need with it. She's super fun to ride, without washing out – and really helped me progress on the freestyle courses because she did exactly what I wanted her to when I was attempting something new on the features. It was amazing to watch the feedback video from the Definition freestyle course as you could see how flexible the Oh Yeah was on the tail presses on the box, when I could've still put a lot more effort into it.

Rider in Mind
The Salomon Oh Yeah is definitely a board for a girl who wants to get better at riding and wants to progress in all areas of her snowboarding. I love everything to do with snowboarding – whether it's powder days, cruising the mountain, spring park sessions, or hanging out with buddies in the domes – and the Salomon Oh Yeah checks all those boxes. The Oh Yeah also has some sweet graphics, without looking too 'girly', and I particularly love the Salomon branding along the base.

Other thoughts
Taking the Salomon Oh Yeah out to Serbia was pretty nerve-wracking as it was fresh out the factory wrap and the 'difficult-to-ride-strange-boards' thought in my mind was saying, “It's a new board, what if you can't ride it?”. But I didn't need to worry because as soon as I'd attached my bindings and was perfecting my bedroom-floor-jib-sessions (complete with bandana and goggles, obviously!), I knew everything would be fine. First run down the mountain was alongside pro rider Scott Penman, which then reinstated my nerves at riding a new board, but after flatlining the fresh powder of that run, I was giggling like a schoolgirl and loving everything the Salomon Oh Yeah was giving me, desperate to jump on the next lift.

My thoughts
The Salomon Oh Yeah is fun, poppy, playful, and helps you to enjoy everything snowboarding is all about, while helping you to progress along the way – no matter where you're riding. What's more, the price tag of the 2012 model was crazy cheap for what you got, so if the 2013 prices are along the same lines, you could pay so much more for a board which did much less for your riding than the Salomon Oh Yeah will do for you. Next stop for the 2013 Oh Yeah – spring sessions in Cham!
