Ride in Tahoe!

GB had a chance to catch up with Katie Blundell and Rowan Biddiscombe recently and will be covering there epic trip to Tahoe. We kicked it of with a run down of what Katie had been up to since getting over there, a Tahoe quiz and also lot's more to come!

Questions by Kaz Willmer
Katie's Blog-

So here we are in Lake Tahoe, California….and its rad! We arrived on the 13th December and me and the 5 (soon to be 6) boys are loving it already!

At the moment in our house its Simon Belson, Rowan Biddiscombe, Will Radula-Scott, Ricky Martens…..and me and Rich!! we have also kidnapped a rad girl (who makes brownies) Cherrie Spalding who is living with us now until the girls house arrives at the end of Jan.

We are living in a mountain town called Truckee, which looks like a little western town, It used to be railway town back in the day. Everyone is super friendly, although i've forgotten the amount of times we have been asked 'what part of Australia are you from'!!!

When we arrived in America, we hired some pimp cars from the airport and drove the 3 and a half hours from San Fran to Truckee. We woke up next day to find it dumping. We went to Reno to buy a car. This is where we found '"Dorris"…..a Dodge Dakota Truck with massive engine problems and a dislike of the cold!! The boys bought a hippy bus called Betty! Driving back up to our new home we go stuck in the 3 foot of snow that had fallen since that morning. We abandoned Dorris and went to find help, by the time we got back poor Dorris had already got towed and we had to pay a hefty fine to get her back. We spent the next 4 days snowed in to our house (good job we had hot tub and backyard jibs to keep us amused) But when the weather finally cleared….we went shredding!!!!

We started off riding Northstar, which is actually AMAZING!! The park (the main reason we are here) is perfect. The kickers are always immaculately shaped, rails in abundance and the pipe is lush! Northstar riding is nothing like i have experienced in other countries. It is extremely fast paced and sometimes can be quite intimidating. Literally as you get to the end of the rail, someone else behind is already hitting it! But i feel that this can help you sometimes as there is not time to think and get scared of things and you know you have to land your tricks or else you get squashed!! The standard here is very high, even you average punter is thowing styley 360s over decent size jumps! Everyone sticks to their own crews over here…..you have the Gangsters, the Gypsies, the 'tight pants skinny stance', the Ausies, the Weekend Warriors, the Skiers…..and then us…THE BRITS!!!

We have hooked up with another house of 4 british boys (Billy Morgan and his crew) and have been having loads of fun riding with those guys too. They have stolen a rail and wall ride for their garden which we are hoping to go round and have a session on soon.

Then we had blackout days on our ski pass, which meant that we couldn't ride Northstar for 5 days, which sucked! We binged on a lot of fast food to make us feel better then decided to start doing some street spots. A lot of the local americans don't even have lift passed and just hit up all the street spots for the season. This year, we have the help of Banchee Bungee to propel us into the street features…..pretty weird to get used to but fun all the same. We hit a swing gate to get some practice and then moved onto 19 step hand rail in a school and nearly got kicked off by security and the police called….but luckily Rowan managed to sweet talk them into letting us hit it for an hour! The police are pretty hardcore here, so its always a race against time hitting street before you get shut down!

We also decided to buy a Boreal Mountain night shred pass so we could get some park laps done in the evening. Boreal has a much more relaxed vibe than Northstar and is just a fun, laid back park to jib in the eves. Is kinda feels like your in a British snowdome when your riding there!

Christmas and new year were relatively chilled…..well apart from a stinking hangover xmas day. Then after new years (which i might add….me and Rich stayed in and drank tea as we were still abit tender form xmas), we headed back up to the hill. On the 2nd of Jan, we took a trip down to Sierra Mountain to compete in the Volcom Peanut Butter rail Jam. As normal in USA, the standard was really high. After countless times taking the knarly hike to the top of the course, it was time for the final. Me and Will Radula-Scott qualified for the final. Neither of us placed, but we were stoked to even get to the final as there were heaps of people. But we were even more stoked to get free t-shirts and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!!

So now we are back shredding Northstar by day, and Boreal by night (when we have the energy to do both). We are stoked on doing lots of filming, so watch out for our edits " The Herringbone Way" …..named after the street we live on. Also watch out for girly shred-its by Heel Edge projects!

More Snowboarding Videos

We have our last house mate Ed Stockwell arriving this week (another Tignes Local from the Loop Bar) and also Lynsey Ashdown. And then a house of 6 girls arriving at the end of the month. So altogether there will be a crew of 20 Brits, wooohoo! Lake Tahoe watch out!

The Tahoe Resorts Apres-shred Quiz

Rider name: Rowan Biddiscombe

Best quiz team name you've ever heard: The Purple Headed Yogurt Slingers

Round 1 – General knowledge round

Round 1 – General knowledge round

Set the scene - Where are you right now?

Truckee/Lake Tahoe, California baby. Jealous?

Which countries do you most like to ride?

Well, so far, America is slaying everywhere else I've ever been! BUT, there's always a special place in my heart for the Penken Park in Mayrhofen, Austria... I heard they've got a mad new baby-shred this year too. YEAH BABY SHRED!

If you were trying to sell your board to someone, what would you say? (ie, What are you riding and why do you like it?)

I'm rocking a 156 wide Ride Kink at the moment, it's super rad and super strong, I'm a pretty hefty guy and so far (touch wood) it's stood up like a champ to all my abuse!

If you could invent one trick, what would it be called?

Ha, the Camberwell Carrot! A crazily corked backside 9 double tailgrab. Boom.

Who do you most enjoy riding with and why?

Just anyone that is stoked on snowboarding, really... I can't be dealing with all the moaners! Stop moaning will ya!

If you could have one track on a movie section, what would it be?

Debruit - I'm Goin' Wit' You (Feat. Om'Mas Keith)

I accidently stumbled accross this guy while on a chaotic night out in Brixton a few years back, I've been hooked ever since...

How do you keep busy when you're not riding?

That depends on how poor I am at the time! Ha, I'm a bit of a computer geek actually, I spend quite a lot of time editing videos/pictures, producing/remixing music, Djing. I'm a pretty keen skater when the sun shines too... Oh and my least favourite thing, working. You've got to stack those dollar bills if you want to ride anywhere other than the UK!

What goes through your mind when you're stoking up for a comp?

A man much wiser than me once said, 'You need to keep your mind on that s*!% you want, and off of that f$*&ing s*!% that you don't'

Simple as that...

Which comps are the most fun to enter?

Jams for sure, I'm really not down with the whole 'two runs and that's yer lot' type affairs. They bring unwanted nerves and pressure into my life.

What's the best riding advice you've ever had?

BEND YOUR STUPID GIRLY KNEES! Pretty much every snowboarding induced problem can be corrected somewhat by flexing them knees! Can't quite grab that stalefish? Bend your knees more... Keep washing out on your landings? Bend your knees more... Not nailing that switch hard way BS 360 into a gnarly down-flat-down rail? You got it, go home, you're embarassing us all...

Round 2 – Quick-fire Round

Mc Twist/Big Mac

Bacon double cheeseburger, and a Mc Twist

Karaoke/Guitar Hero

Karaoke every time

Park/Pow

Park, sorry...

Hike/Heli

Freezers/Dry Slope

Freezers... Yeah Hemel!

Jager/Tequila

Jager

Round 3 – Feature Round

Ski Lake Tahoe has given you the choice of three new park features on one of their mountains. What would they be and what trick would you throw off of them?

1 Boxes with noises™ - Just any old boxes with sound effects, sword slash boardslide anyone? Rocket launch nosepress perchance? It'll revolutionise the snowboarding world...

2 Pond skim, to pole jam... I'd most likely throw a water slide to face plant on the pole jam I reckon.

3 Finally, a snow loop-the-loop. I would loop-the-loop. Yes.

The Tahoe Resorts Apres-shred Quiz

Rider name: Katie Blundell

Best quiz team name you've ever heard:"The Winning Team"

Round 1 – General knowledge round

Set the scene - Where are you right now?

Im in our house waiting to go riding but watching the rain p*ssing down(even though it is not supposed to rain in Tahoe)……eating chocolate to make myself feel better!

Which countries do you most like to ride?

Lots for different reasons…..America for their immaculate parks, Austria/france for the apres and Australia for the fun, friendly vibe. really want to find one place that has everything all in one…..Mayrhofen is pretty sick

If you were trying to sell your board to someone, what would you say? (ie, What are you riding and why do you like it?)

Please buy my board….i need some money!!!!No, really i would say "i ride a 139 Ride Compact which is actually one of the best boards i have ever ridden(and im not just saying that). Its perfect for my style of riding, its light, nimble, easy to press and really poppy and good for jibbing, not to soft and not too stiff. I really rate this board, its rad!"

If you could invent one trick, what would it be called?

a "fietsbandventieldopje"……my dutch friend told me this word and i thought it sounded cool….. i think it has something to do with bikes???!!!

Who do you most enjoy riding with and why?

I honestly enjoy riding with lots of different people. I think its important to mix up who you ride with too. Its good to ride with my boyfriend as he can always pick up the pieces. I like riding with boys as they push you and i love riding with a good girly crew as its fun. Really, i like to ride with anyone that is stoked on riding, likes to have fun and isn't too serious. The people you ride with can really make or break your day!

If you could have one track on a movie section, what would it be?

'Over, Under, Sideways down' by the Yardbirds….Joe sexton's section in down with people

How do you keep busy when you're not riding?

Whilst im out in Tahoe, it pretty much consists of facebook, hot tub, eating, trying to understand Final Cut Pro and just hanging out with everyone. Inbetween seasons i like to try and spend as much time with all my friends/family that i have neglected at home and keep my self active with other things…..dancing, trampolining, going to the gym, hanging out at the beach if its sunny. Also work my arse off to save money for the next season!

What goes through your mind when you're stoking up for a comp?

shiiiit, im so nervous, i feel sick, everyones really good, sh*t!…..this is honestly what goes through my head before a comp!

Which comps are the most fun to enter?

Jams for definite. I get really bad nerves so jams are so much better for me as there is much less pressure and its more fun….its just like riding with your friends. It always pushes me to try new things in jams.

What's the best riding advice you've ever had?

katie, don't hit that! haha

I really think the best advice i have ever had is listen to your gut instincts!

Round 3 – Feature Round

Ski Lake Tahoe has given you the choice of three new park features on one of their mountains. What would they be and what trick would you throw off of them?

1 Pole jam to box……i would try a back 1 off pole jam to switch 5-0 to cab three off……..this is in my dreams but maybe if i practiced lots then i would be able to do this!

2 down flat down flat down flat down….with stairs…..and i would just like to get to the end of it!

3 an airbag! I have never hit an airbag and never tried flips but would love to learn them… i did gymnastics for years but still haven't figured out how to do flips with a board on!
