Relentless Energy Drink Freeze Festival 2012

Some of the UK’s top riders showed the rest of the world how we roll this weekend in what turned out to be the best display of snowboarding ever to land on English soil. Coupled with a soundtrack from the likes of Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash, the Relentless Energy Drink Freeze festival was an epic weekend that noone will want to forget.

In true celebration to the start of winter, the temperatures plummeted around Battersea Power Station, and crowds huddled together like flocks of penguins to savour every bit of warmth. But it was worth every second, in a weekend where some of the world’s top riders pleased every shivering reveller with an incredible display of riding.

Names such as the Helgasons, Kevin Backstrom and Victor de La Rue hit the 32m long snow-covered scaffold, alongside the who’s-who of British riding – Dom Harington, Scott Penman, Cody Hieron, Billy Morgan, Andy Nudds, Lewis Sonvico… and many more.

But it was the UK’s home-grown who wowed the crowds, with Dom Harington claiming the Battle of Britain victory with his super steezy back 9, and Billy Morgan stealing the International Big Air podium spot, including a slow-mo backflip victory lap, in some spectacular displays of snowboarding. Crowd-pleaser Scott Penman busted out his famous double-flips, while riders such as Nuddsy and Nate Kern kept the home crowds stoked through the arctic air.

I was honoured to play a part in witnessing not only the stoke from the riders as they pushed themselves to their limits, but feeling the support and love each of the riders were giving each other along the way. It was an incredible sign how tight our riders are, and how much support the UK snowboarding scene has for our own athletes, as they battled it out through the day and night. We were in awe at their efforts and ability to hit such an incredible jump – a far cry from back-country powder kickers or perfect mountain park setups.

Alongside this immense display of riding from the world of snowboarding, Freeze Festival truly celebrated the start of winter, with plenty of bars, music, snowboarding, retail and a pre-season chance to catch up with buddies.

Whether it was feeling the incredible beats from Duke in the Desperados tent, warming your fingers over a mulled wine on the Relentless bar fire, or stocking up on next season’s kit in the retail area, the Relentless Energy Drink Freeze Festival once again proved to be the ultimate winter warm-up, providing once again, without fail, something for everyone, under the urban shadow of one of London’s most iconic landmarks.
