Living the Dream

Living the dream by Sue Garlick, Treeline Chalets.com

Ever dreamt of being a professional snowboarder, traveling the world riding everyday, having fun with your mates? Most of us have hoped we have the skills at some point to take it that step further, get ‘ sponsored’, but what does it really mean to be a sponsored professional rider and what does it take to keep it going?
There are so many levels of sponsorship and whilst the big money generally lies in the states there have been a few ‘pro’s who have taken it close to this level and continue to do so here in the UK, Danny Wheeler and Jamie Nicholls to name but a few.

What is the cost of following your dream? Riders generally start off on a shop or a flow deal which basically see’s them receiving free or discounted kit from the brand or their local store. This obviously helps with the cost of getting your shred on but as you progress up the sponsorship ladder and your sponsors expect a little more from you each time, you need to be spending more time on snow, more time at comps, more time filming… who pays for it all?

The harsh reality is that money is not free flowing in the UK industry, there are few riders who earn enough from riding alone that means they can ride all year round. This is why riders also obtain sponsorship from other business, like chalets. It’s not easy snowboarding for a living especially in the present climate. It’s a dream for many to be a ‘pro’ but these guys still have to work for it, working all the hours possible in the summer to be able to afford to spend their winters in the snow and travel the world to add to their sponsors funding.

Treeline Chalets supports 2 riders, helping them out with accommodation, lift pass, transfers and contacts for whenever they are in Portes du Soleil. Rome rider Dom Harrington has ridden for Treeline since they first set up in Morzine and has benefitted from being able to stop off there for a photo shoot or in transit. He gets a super luxury stay, with hot tub, plenty of food and chill time. Recently Treeline have also taken on Westbeach Rider Andy Nudds offering the same deal. It basically offers the riders a sanctuary after a long journey, a place they know they can go and chill before their next big thing.

Amy and Duncan from Treeline decided to start sponsoring riders to try to support British riders more from the Alps. Being a Westbeach and Rome Snowboards sponsored chalet, it’s not only these 2 riders who benefit from Treeline’s hospitality. Last winter the Westbeach house in the centre of Morzine, (housing most of the UK Westbeach team) were dropped off tasty food parcels from Treeline to keep them fueled for the next day on the hill. It can be super expensive to live in the Alps and these luxury food parcels helped save funds for the next trip that winter.

Obviously it’s not all one sided, in return for their sponsorship Andy and Dom offer Treeline great exposure, they’re ready for photo shoots to help with the chalet’s marketing, they offer guests the chance to ride with them when they’re about and after staying at the chalet and getting the full chalet treatment can pass on first hand recommendations to potential guests.
Both Dom and Andy recently competed at the Relentless Freeze Festival and are now ready for this coming winter.

This winter Andy Nudds is heading out to Tahoe for the start of the winter, he will be in Europe late winter to spend some time with Treeline along with Dom. Last winter Dom visited on a few occasions and there was always a bed with his name on and plenty of food so he wouldn’t go hungry.

Make sure you enter the Treeline and Westbeach Competition to win a weeks stay at Treeline and a some Westbeach Kit… You may also get to stay with the guys and go shredding with them around Portes du Soleil! Click Here
