Q. What is Alpine Ethos all about?

A. Alpine Ethos is a chalet company that currently runs one large chalet – Chalet St. Joseph in Les Allues, Meribel. It’s a great chalet that sleeps up to 16 people and has a hot tub, sauna and a big board/boot room with heated boot rack. We work hard to make the chalet a home from home with everything you might need to entertain you and great food and wine to enjoy after a day on the slopes.

Q. How did Alpine Ethos begin?

A. We’d just had enough of the 9 to 5 jobs we had in the financial sector in the UK. That, together with our love of cooking and the mountains in general (we snowboard in winter and mountain-bike in summer) led us to Meribel.

Q. Why Meribel?

A. Meribel is a fantastic resort right in the centre of the Three Valleys ski area – the biggest linked ski area in the world. It has a huge variety of terrain to suit all types of riders and loads of off-piste possibilities. It is also a great place to learn & progress freestyle riding with 5 snowparks to choose from, two of which are in the Meribel Valley (DC Area 43 and the Meribel Moonpark).

Q. What made you decide to start running the snowboard camps?

A. We just love snowboarding and want other people to love it too. The camp is a great way to get like-minded snowboarders together to progress their skills and have fun.

Q. Why do you work with Cab9 Snowboard School?

A. Simple…because they’re the best! They are true snowboarders (i.e. not ski instructors who learned to snowboard later) who love their sport and have top teaching techniques to get the best out of everyone.

Q. What can riders expect from this year’s camp?

A. This year as well as Cab9 instructors we have a pro-rider from the Salomon snowboard team joining the camp to add another dimension to the coaching team. The camp will focus on flat-land tricks and then progress into the park to work on the boxes, rails & kickers. The coaching will be tailored to the group and can include anything from mastering presses and boardslides on the boxes to 540s over the kickers. If we get fresh snow, the campers will get off-piste and take advantage of the fresh pow. The camp also includes plenty of sunny après-action, banter etc.

Q. How much does it cost and how can riders get booked on?

A. The camp costs £850 per person which includes transfers from the airport or train station, twin/double accommodation with food & wine, 6 days coaching, a 6 day Meribel lift pass and a goody bag. Basically the only things we don’t include are flights or beer money! There are still a few places remaining. To get booked on just email Heather or Andy at info@alpineethos.co.uk

Q. What do you think the impact of the British snowboard success at the Olympics will be?

A. The success of Jenny Jones, Billy Morgan and Jamie Nicholls can only be a good thing for snowboarding. It meant more people got to see snowboarding on TV than ever before and even someone who doesn’t snowboard has to admit the slope-style and half-pipe contests were pretty cool. Who wouldn’t want to be able to pull even a fraction of some of those tricks? It was also great that much of our homegrown talent grew up on dry slopes and in the snow domes around the UK. That just goes to show that the ‘barriers’ to the sport that people talk about just don’t exist and that it is a sport for everyone – something we have believed for ages!
