Grounded Freestyle Coaching day – Hemel Snow Centre – 25th June 2011

They say there's no better feeling in riding than when you stomp a new trick, and after yesterday, I can honestly say that eight of us are now the poster faces for 'that-stoked-feeling-you-get-when-you-stomp-something-new'. We were on the Grounded Freestyle Coaching day at Hemel Snow Centre under the guidance of Grounded's Dave Seeley and FBBB's Mikee Cee. Quite frankly, If you want to be a better rider, then there's no doubt Grounded Freestyle Coaching is for you – whoever you are, and whatever your level, style or goal.

The word on the street is that Grounded Freestyle Coaching is among the top of the ranks for training in the UK snow scene, and after seven hours with Dave and Mikee at the Snow Centre, I can see exactly why.

Reason one is that the group was small. With only eight of us alongside two trainers, it meant we got the dedicated training we needed as individual riders, and no one was lost in the back or left behind. Dave and Mikee could see our own styles and individual needs, which meant that every one of us progressed as riders in just one day.

Each one of us in the group were at a different level, and each one of us had tried/not tried certain things before, so what struck me about the course in particular was that Dave and Mikee were there pushing our progression depending on our abilities. There was no one saying, “right, we're all now going to bust 3's off the kicker”, it was about stripping our current abilities down and pushing us as individuals.

This, alongside the small group size, meant everyone was really supportive of each other, no matter what we were attempting on the features. No one laughed at you or judged you – everyone was there to learn something new and to become a better rider, and that's why people keep coming back on these courses.

Dave and Mikee know what they're doing. Rather than just being people who think they can instruct - they actually can instruct. Our riding was stripped down to basics and we were analysed and tweaked from a technical angle, so rather than just accepting you can doing something and moving on, it was perfected.

Alongside this, Dave and Mikee had been at the Snow Centre til 1am the night before, building the features for us. The features were closed off to the public, so with only eight of us in the group, it not only meant that they stayed in great condition for us all day, but we were never queuing behind people who weren't on the course.

We were continually lapping the features, because they were clear by the time we were back at the top – something I've never seen on a freestyle training course before. It meant we could all progress, because we could just keep trying things over and over, without stopping and waiting. It made the course very intensive and that's why we improved.

Seven hours after arriving at Hemel Snow Centre, we all left shattered but stoked, and today my limbs are feeling it more than ever. But I realise that this is because it was the first time I've been truly pushed out of my comfort zone on park features. With the course lasting all day, rather than just a couple of hours, it meant we had the opportunity to keep practicing - fall, get up, tweak, and try again - with professional instructors to tell us exactly how to make it better each time.

To top it all off, as part of Grounded Freestyle courses, we all get individual after-course feedback, with written analysis and video breakdowns based on the footage taken of each of us during the training. I cannot wait to receive this feedback because we've been told it will not only highlight how much we improved in just one day, but will also give us advice on how to keep improving, and things to remember next time we hit the park.

Every single one of us improved yesterday with a unanimous voice from Grounded course first-timers that this is the best thing that could have happened to our riding – and there's no doubt we'll be back again, alongside those who already come back every time. I've never had the confidence to try something new, particularly in the indoor freezers, but thanks to Grounded Freestyle I've progressed in just one day – both mentally and in my riding ability. I'm stoked, and for that I can't thank Dave and Mikee enough.
