Grounded Freestyle Coaching - 29th July 2012

For many of us, summer is just a passing time between winters. For the lucky ones, it's either the gap between seasons, or hitting up the Southern Hemisphere to run the 'endless winter' dream. But with only a few months left until the mountains are calling, this is the time of the year we really feel important to not only keeping up the skills we learnt the previous winter, but developing the skills enough to take our next winter to the next level.

Sunday 29th July was spent doing just that – progressing our riding with Grounded Freestyle Coaching, under the incredible guidance of Dave Seeley, as well as FBBB's Mikee Cee and Chris Halpin.

We were blessed with an immense freestyle setup from the Hemel Freestyle park team – a side-hit DC rail, a kicker, a flat-to-down butter box, and an elevated SCUK box. It was possibly the biggest indoor park setup I've personally ever hit, but with the aim of the day to push you out of your comfort zone, this definitely did just that for every level of rider.

GFC's Dave Seeley runs these course throughout the year to help riders of all levels progress at the sport they love. Everyone who comes on these courses is enthusiastic and determined to improve, and the training is tailored to what each individual rider needs and wants to improve on.

Dave not only coaches the GB armed forces team, but some of the top riders in the UK. Riders of all ages come on the course, with the youngest being just 6 years old, and showing unbelievable progression through Dave's training. Many of the other riders are regulars who just can't get enough of the courses because they know the GFC setup works.

I find with some such high level riders on the course it is super inspiring to see where you can reach by doing these courses. Just watching other riders of all levels progress in something they love as much as you do is extremely motivating, and I find everyone is supportive of each other, whatever they're trying to achieve.

The patience of all the coaches was second-to-none, and were on hand to give every rider tips on every feature on every lap. With the three coaches available, riders were given the individual attention they needed to progress, and could even be taken off for one-on-one coaching for extra focus on something. As the features were exclusively for our use, queuing was kept to a minimum, and every feature was always kept in good condition throughout the day.

Not only were the coaches always offering advice and support, and methods of tweaking to make every run better, videos were taken throughout the day, as well as photographs by Jools Smith, in order for us to be able to not only see our own progression, but to spot areas for development in the future.

The day is always extremely tiring and challenging, both physically and mentally, as you're on snow from 10am to 5pm with very intense training. Pushing yourself out your comfort zone always leads to a lot of bruises and bails, but also leaves you with a sense of achievement because you've pushed yourself to your limits and become better as a result. Soon after the course, Dave always sends a breakdown analysis of your day on the course, with details of your individual progression, linked to your individual video footage, with areas to work on to continue that progression.

This is the third GFC course I've been on and it really is the only way for anyone who's dedicated to the sport to not only gain top level technical training tailored to them, but to be able to achieve far more in just one day than you could in a whole week riding with your mates in the mountain. I cannot thank Dave, Mikee and Chris enough, and am already stoked on the next course.
