Definition Freestyle – February 2012, SNO!Zone, Milton Keynes.

On Saturday afternoon we decided to do the half day freestyle course with Definition Camps. By the second run, we’d already decided we were coming back the next day, giving us one of the best freestyle training weekends we’ve had in the UK freezers.

By Kaz Willmer

There were 6 of us at Sno!Zone MK on the course, and day 1 was all about boxes. Some of the other guys had been doing the full day box course, so we rocked up in the afternoon to join in. Definition courses are so flexible that you can do whole days, half days or whole weekends, and still benefit – but when we booked on, we didn’t realise we’d be back so soon for another hit!

Gavin Learmonth is the man behind Definition, who has coached the British Junior Snowboard team and was not only asked to coach the British World Cup Halfpipe Team, but took them to the 2006 Winter Olympics too. If you needed proof of his talents nearer to home, then you just need to watch Definition regular Cerys Allen riding – she’s just been accepted on the junior GB squad, and is a natural on the features.

She was on hand not only to train with Definition, but to also demo for us before we’d hit the features. Some of the guys on the course had never hit boxes before, while others had done other freestyle courses - but whatever the level of riding, it was super fun to see every rider progress so much.

Boardslides and tail presses were in my bag by the end of the day, and I could not have left happier. I’ve attempted them before but a combination of Gavin’s calm nature and coaching methods meant we were all stomping new tricks without thinking too hard about it – and that’s why we came back for more the next day!

What’s more we had David Allen on hand to not only pimp our features for us, but to take photos – proving everyone looked better riders on every lap. He was also really helpful showing us some of the photos when we’d lapped the run, so we knew how we looked and what needed tweaking.

The features were ours for the weekend, so they stayed fresh for every run – and because there were so few of us, there was no queuing, we could just keep lapping and progressing. Considering you could pay £30 for just 2 hours slopetime, £60 for 4 hours with individual tuition is an amazing price – particularly as you’re guaranteed to get better. Evidence was in the video analysis in the bar afterwards. I was told I’d nailed my tail press, but didn’t believe it til saw the full-on proof on the video. We’d all progressed and were nailing things we’d not even attempted before that day. Fact.

And then along came Sunday morning – kicker day.

After a few warm up runs, we went through a few riding exercises to make us more central over our boards, which in turn really helped us when it came to hit the kicker. Once again Cerys was on hand to demo at each stage and David was there to take some awesome shots.

Gavin stayed at the top of the kicker so by the him we’d lapped back around, he was on hand to tweak our own individual riding, meaning everyone could get better whether they were just hitting a kicker for the first time, or busting out grabs and spins. He breaks everything down so we can get better in stages, and without the fear.

Looking back over the weekend, I particularly remembered one thing: I was grinning on every run. Why? We were pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones without really thinking about it. There was no fear, no pressure, just a bunch of guys all wanting to get better at something they love.

Gavin’s teaching styles meant there was no pressure or worry – we could just tweak little bits each time to reach exactly where we wanted. Whether Gavin likes it or not, we’ll be back on Definition, purely because we can have fun and enjoy ourselves at the same time as pushing our riding.

He helped install confidence inside us all, just through his support and genuine love for something he does, and eagerness to share this passion with anyone who wants it. It’s the reason people not only keep coming back for more, but keep getting better every time too.
