“When you’ve just booked your week’s snowboarding holiday, what are your hopes and expectations? Well there’s definitely ‘snowy’ for starters, and of course ‘fun times with friends’ is up there, along with ‘chilled out’ in a cosy comfortable chalet. Not to mention ‘memorable’ après antics!

Well what about a great learning experience? Not really what you were dreaming about? Improving your riding is often way down your list when you’re hunting round for the perfect holiday with friends. If you’re one of those people who love to progress your riding and become a better all-round snowboarder then a snowcamp holiday could be the perfect way to spend your week in the mountains.

BoardnLodge Snowcamps have become extremely popular with many campers returning each year to progress their riding under the watchful eye of head coach Steve Addicott and the team of pros. The BoardnLodge formula is pretty simple; get a kick ass chalet, employ some seriously awesome instructors, be passionate about what you do and have great local knowledge of the mountain. James Kellow founded BoardnLodge in 1999 and drew on his wealth of experience to launch a series of snowcamps in 2006. Since then the camps have gone from strength to strength using James’s knowledge to select little known resorts as well as some of the more well known ski areas to give the large number of campers who re-book each year a new adventure every time.

Jenny Sharland, a first time camper, said of the BoardnLodge booking experience “It was James’s enthusiastic response that grabbed me. I’d looked into other camps where their responses to my queries had been slow or were too much of a hard sell. As I was travelling alone I wanted reassurance and clear answers to my questions and James delivered that, putting me totally at my ease.”

From day one, your snowboarding is broken down and you’ll be put into groups to try out your new skills. The big question of the week is, ‘Will this exercise make you a better snowboarder?’ - The answer is always yes!!! Not only do you get to ride with the super impressive riders who are your coaches, you get to hone your new skills as you’re guided round the mountain all day by the BoardnLodge crew. The creative coaches push you to challenge yourself leading to that awesome feeling of “I can’t believe I just did that!”.

Return camper Ed Smith described his experience of the camps, “They’re perfect for developing my all mountain freestyle skills and I was hitting things on this trip that I never thought I’d be trying. The camps really help to develop your freestyle riding by honing your skills on the slopes and transferring what you learn to the park, just jibbing off on side hits or venturing off piste.”

I sampled the BoardnLodge Snowcamp in the relatively new resort of Nassfeld, Austria, hosted by Craig and Katherine in their chalet. After a warm welcome from the hosts, we had a chance to mingle and get to know the other campers and found ourselves in a room full of new faces and a few friends from previous camps. One thing is for sure you’ll definitely have something in common with everyone…a love of snowboarding!

First morning we were up and on the mountain early whilst we found our snow legs! There is always a good mix of abilities on the camps so whatever your level, you’re catered for. Considering the resort hadn’t been dumped on for what looked like a good few weeks, the snow conditions were surprisingly good – Nassfeld’s snow making abilities proved pretty effective. The coaches had us practising new skills all over the mountain before heading into the park. Apparently spinning a 180 off the piste requires the same level of rotation to spin a 720 off a kicker – bring it on – well, er, maybe not quite yet! A newly invented trial dreamt up in Nassfeld by coach Wes was aptly named the 3 river challenge – basically jump over 3 streams in succession leading to some of the funniest moments of the week!

The level of progression on the camps always astounds me. I love knowing I’ve achieved something new each and every time. Previous camps have seen me ride the half pipe, hit huge red kickers in the park in Pila and attempt my first cliff drop! This time was all about boxes. We sessioned one of the boxes in the park whilst the coaches broke down our riding and tweaked our technique. It led to me riding laps through the park hitting box after box and stomping 180’s off the spine – I was stoked, and I wasn’t the only one!

The camps even take you off the slopes and develop your technique on the trampoline. This was super useful as it allowed you to experience how a trick should feel and get to grips with rotations, grabs and even flips!

What James and the coaches achieve with the camps is truly awesome. It’s great to see your fellow riders improve, whether they were awesome to begin with and adding a new trick to their armory, or they were just starting out and perfecting their first Ollie – everyone’s progression is so impressive! I guess the only thing I’d change was to have more snow, but I’m pretty sure I can’t put that one on BoardnLodge! I’d totally recommend heading out on a BoardnLodge Snowcamp. They are ideal for singles, couples and groups of friends of all ages; an interesting and varied mix making for a great holiday. Get your booking in now before the rest of the world catches on!”
