Review Detail
‘SSX On Tour’ is the fourth in the SSX series and it not only is it as good as its predecessors, but personally I found it to be overall more enjoyable and more entertaining.

There are two main game modes on offer, the Tour and quick-play. Quick-play basically lets you jump straight into the action; onto the slopes. When you select Tour mode, you’ll find yourself confronted with numerous gameplay variations which obviously helps with the overall lasting appeal of the game. There’s plenty to keep you going for quite some time.

The main objective of Tour mode is to start off as a completely unknown newbie and go on to become the king of the mountain. This is achieved by taking part in various competitions or racing rivals, which in turn builds up ‘hype’. The more hype you build up, the more you’ll start to climb up the amateur rankings and then onto the pros. This hype can be accumulated via shredding, knockdowns, collectables and so on.

When starting off in Tour Mode, you have to create your character. What’s new to this version of SSX is that you’re given the choice of whether you want to snowboard or ski! Whilst we all know that skiing just isn’t as enjoyable as boarding (!), it’s still a welcome addition to the game and adds a slightly different fun angle on things. On some of the events you’ll find yourself sharing the mountain with numerous skiers which are always good canon fodder for racking up your knockdown tally!

I found the load times to be similar to that of the previous SSX titles, if anything perhaps slightly faster. Whilst I’ve not played the game right through yet, I’ve not experienced any lag/slow-down during gameplay yet, which from memory seemed to occur now and then in the previous titles. You have to give top marks for the sheer creativity and originality of the whole interface and loading screens. Despite these crazy interfaces, everything is still easy to find and navigate through.

In summary, I think if you were a fan of the previous SSX titles, you’ll not be disappointed with ‘On Tour’. With Tour Mode, stacks of rewards and new tricks to unlock/buy, I think there’s a lot of game to keep everyone going for quite a while.
Strengths
- Continuation of a great gaming series;
- Excellent game speed;
- Decent graphics & sound;
- Original design around game;
- Most importantly, it's 'so' playable!
Weaknesses
- None that I can think of at the moment. Will update the review when I've played it more.
